Sigh... and the stupidity of school systems continues. You gotta love the world we live in... where a 10 year old is charged for a felony while trying to eat her lunch. :)

----

An elementary student in Marion County was arrested Thursday after school officials found her cutting food during lunch with a knife that she brought from home, police said.

The 10-year-old girl, a student at Sunrise Elementary School in Ocala, was charged possession of a weapon on school property, which is a felony.

According to authorities, school employees spotted the girl cutting her food while she was eating lunch and took the steak knife from her.

The girl told sheriff's deputies that she had brought the knife to school on more than one occasion in the past.

Students told officials that the girl did not threaten anyone with the knife.

The girl was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

:wall: We just have to have more laws to defend us from such lawlessness so prevalent with 10 year olds. :panic:

The charges will be dropped, but it's ridiculous that it even went that far.

It's also stupid that her parents didn't educate her about disposable plastic knives.

Or send her to school with a lunch that didn't require cutting with a knife at all.

We have children getting beaten and raped and pregnant at this age and she brings a knife to school to cut up her apple and is charged with a felony.

Ridiculous, then again, the parents should have sent a lunch that didn't require any additional cutting.

No child left behind.

agreed the parents sending a plastic knife, or a lunch that did not require cutting...

but this is still one of the dumbest things things I have heard...

Two points.

1) I carried a knife to school regularly from about second grade on. I never knifed anybody.

2) I have a feeling this girl was trying to make a stupid point, probably because daddy is a jerk.

No tolerance laws are s-t-o-o-p-i-d, but I hate bratty kids as much - or more - than idiotic no tolerance policies.

We need to run for the school board. In Tennessee, it's pretty much county or city boards who set the policy. If you won't get involved, don't whine about the idiocy.

You know what?

I'd bet she'd even get expelled for a plastic knife.

We're not allowed to bring our own scissors to school in Clinton, anymore.

I was thinking the same thing, actually. They'd probably still claim that it was a deadly weapon. :panic:

Get involved folks or don't whine.

My involvement will be home schooling or military academy. Not whining at all... the public school system is ****ed, and always will be thanks to where our society now lies. This is why I attended a private Catholic school, even though it wasn't my religious belief. At least they had a much better education curriculum, was based on God and country still, had a family atmosphere (each graduating class was at max 40 people), and excellent security measures in place. I'll raise my children myself, or send them to an institution I can stand behind, where God is still a central belief... the people with guns are the good guys... and PTA moms can suck a dick.

/end rant

Pretty stupid taking a knife to school. The rules may suck but they are in place and a ten year old will know about that rule. Hopefully it does not go on her permanent record.

When I was a kid in school that threat was always hung over your head if you did something wrong.

I agree with diciplinary action because of the no weapons rule...but a FELONY???!!!!! holy CRAP, little extreme...especially since you can use a freaking PEN as a weapon..next they will have to use crayons..

ok, I am done whining...I am very involved with my kids school, didnt think I needed to join a school board to figure out that cutting meat is not a FELONY, but I guess I will look into it :)

:eek:I was just thinking how damn dangerous pencils and pens were as striking weapons! I have a pencil lead in my shin from where I was pestering a young lady in grade school in the desk in front of mine. She just grabbed her pencil and struck down and back and NAILED me! It's still visible 35 years later! Rulers, book bag with 5 books in it as a flail, shoe laces as a garrotte! Send em to school in Crocs, disposable paper suits and dry erase pens, its the only way to make it safe! Its for the children!:)

Yes, lets ruin this girl's future with a Felony from Possession of something that would otherwise be legal. Let's teach kids that personal responsibility is bad and mindless rules are more important than an actual education.

Let's just keep the population stupid and obedient. That'll solve our problems. This is a shame.

Yep..I agree. It IS a shame.

a little girl gets charged with a felony over an apple. I suppose the Judge must feel like a REAL man, handing down that sentence. He's cleaning up the streets! No crime in his time!

people like this make me want to cuss. The level of stupidity that it takes to get headlines like this boggles the mind...and most folks go along with it. They're more than willing to charge your little girl or boy with a felony..but they definitely don't want to tell you whats going on so that it can be rectified before hand.

spineless, cowardly teachers who couldn't teach you how to read the back of a cereal box. but they have a union so you can't kick them out. They're free to rape our kids and get off with little punishment, but you let a kid bring his shotgun to school in his truck so he can go hunting afterwards or let a 10 year old bring some silverware to school to eat with and OH MY GOD SHE'S GOT A KNIFE!

I agree with Verbal about the schooling, even if it means hiring a tutor and living poor.

She probably thought there was a difference between a pocket knife and a knife to cut her lunch with.

School officials said it doesn't matter what the knife was being used for. They said they had no choice.

"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances, regardless," Christian said.

But the sheriff's office said the extreme measures in what some may say was a harmless incident had to do with school policy, not theirs.

"But once we're notified, we have to take some type of action," Pogue explained.

You notice how in these “zero tolerance†cases no one wants to take responsibility.

This is bs.gif

The school administrators are spineless weasels and so is the cop that responded. If required to do anything, I would have set the kid a juvenile appointment and left her at the school.

Hey Sheriff, when did you stop enforcing state law and start enforcing school policy?

“Zero Tolerance†policies are for people that are to lazy to do their jobs.

Nice Dave...they are also hiding behind the "weapon" terminology...yes, it is a knife, a steak knife...when used to

stick another child=weapon

cut an apple=tool or utencil

same rules apply for a pen, Pencil, fork, spoon, or a STICK that is found on a TREE...

This is exactly one reason why my son was homeschooled for 2 years. Now that we have an option, he attends a private school. It requires me to work extra shifts at work, and to do without a few things (like additional guns). However, I don't have to worry so much about how he is brainwashed, his safety, the type of friends he has, or stupid rules that have no lawful purpose. I can't say that there are none of these worries, but there are less.

It's always boggled my mind how I can't go into certain areas with a small pocket knife, but the same guards never blink about my 8" screwdriver.
