So I had some time to kill this morning while the wife and baby were taking a nap and turned a Team Realtree hunting dvd and I got crazy pumped about the upcoming season. I am going into my third season, and I am still learning and I hope that I never stop learning. I have only killed a doe since starting. I am just hoping that I can get out more this season. With a new baby and all it will be interesting to see how much mama lets me out of the house. Before to long I plan on building a couple of permanent tree stands for the family to use.

Am I alone here? I know we have about five months to go but who cares, I am pumped.

No. Hence, my question. My FIL makes it into a stew, rarely. But I've never had it. Some how I envision it in one piece on skewers. BBQ'd. Gotta have BBQ sauce.

How do YOU cook that squirrel?

When I was a boy, my grandmother used to black skillet fry them on top of the stove... prepared like Southern fried chicken. She also put them into dumplings, just like Southern chicken and dumplings. We didn't know about the Col. back there in the dark ages, but they would have put his KFC to shame. I would be a bit biased about my granny's cooking, don't you know.

i am in the same boat!! i have 2 young kids and hunting time can be slim, but my hunting season is going to be broken up by a mini hunting trip in africa. it will probably only be for one day but should still be fun even if i don't get anything!

There is a spring "Tree Rat" season and a late summer/fall season. Check the hunting guide for exact dates. I fry squirrels with my flintlock rifle, then use them in squirrel and dumplings. If I fry them in a skillet, I throw some fried potatos, turnip greens and cornbread on the plate with them. I will be out this spring for sure!
