FOXNews.com - Homeless 'Hero' Ignored While Dying on NYC Street

A heroic homeless man, stabbed after saving a Queens woman from a knife-wielding attacker, lay dying in a pool of blood for more than an hour as nearly 25 people indifferently strolled past him, a shocking surveillance video obtained by the New York Post reveals.

Some of the passers-by paused to stare at Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax last Sunday morning and others leaned down to look at his face.

He had jumped to the aid of a woman attacked on 144th Street at 88th Road in Jamaica, Queens, at 5:40 a.m., was stabbed several times in the chest and collapsed as he chased his assailant.

In the wake of the bloodshed, a man came out of a nearby building and chillingly took a cellphone photo of the victim before leaving. And in several instances, pairs of people gawked at Tale-Yax without doing anything.

Later, another man stopped, leaned over and vigorously shook Tale-Yax’s body. After lifting the victim’s head and body to reveal a pool of blood, he also walked off.

Not until some 15 minutes after he was shaken by the pedestrian -- more than an hour and 20 minutes after the victim collapsed -- did firefighters finally arrive and discover that Tale-Yax, 31, had died.

Firefighters were responding to a 911 call of a non-life-threatening injury at 7:23 a.m. when they found his body.

Most Americans place value on the aesthetic. Homeless aren't visually appealing.

Shades of Kitty Genovese 1964. Something about those folks in NY.

I'm one former NYer who could never be that indifferent. Though I hate NY and the east overall, careful with that broad brush.

Sick though. And so pointless.

Sorry, did not have any intent to slander. I have good friends and relatives from rural upstate NY. I'll refine my statement to big cities in general.

Blue State.

Center of progressive liberalism or close second to Cali, where the call constantly goes out that we should care for our fellow man.

Yep.

Wow ... sad.

What is it in human nature that would drive people to see someone in dire need and just pass on by? Where were they going?

Thanks for posting this. It reminds me to get off my too often apathetic butt and help some people.

I know some great people from NYC, some that still live there. you can paint that place with a pretty broad brush, and still miss them.

Why would it be too much trouble to at least call 911 and give them the location. I'll never understand people like that.

I have been there a couple of times.. it is hard enough to get someone to tell you what time it is, much less anything else.. It is one of the few places that I truly detest!

I visited NY a back in Feb and the people up there are not alive, they simply exisit. Every person I ran into had a zombie look on their face. This does not supprise me at all. Homeless or not this guy is a hero for saving the lady and somebody (if nobody else the lady that was saved) should have called the police.

I just flat out amazes me that anybody anywhere could be so disaffected that they wouldn't at least make a phone call. Special place in hell for people like that, I hope.

WTF is wrong with people? Do you think that they are heartless and just dont care or are they so absorbed in their texting and emails that they couldnt take the time away to at least call 911? Stories like this make me sick to my stomach and sad for what our country is comming to.

Me neither Volz it just does not make sense to at least make a call:screwy:

We have auto wrecks in front of the house here pretty regular, I hate it but out I go every time to see if everyone is OK, of course I am already on the phone with 911 and remain so for as long as needed.

Last year a car flipped and hit pole, the lady driver died and I was certain the child in the back in the car seat was also gone. The male passenger I was able to help get out of the car and had to tell him that everyone was OK when I knew they were not.

As it turned out the child was in fact OK but the lady did not make it. I do not need stuff like that added to the stresses in my life but I can not simply sit here and Just make a call. Much less not even make a call.

I think people who could walk by like that in the OP must not have a Soul, I can find no other explanation.

APATHY is the cause of our countries current problems and I feel...

"All we have to fear is Apathy itself."

The man is a hero and gave his life to save another. No doubt where he has gone to. Those who walked by and did not offer help, no doubt where they're headed...unless they change their ways.
