If that is meaningless, then what does a properly posted sign look like?

The front entrance to the OB center at The Med (Memphis hospital) has a gun in a circle with a slash through it. I don't think there is any wording, but I didn't look carefully.

Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't bring a gun in there anyway because parts of The Med are considered UT, and I was taught carry is prohibited on university property.

The statute dealing with signs says this:

The sign shall be of a size that is plainly visible to the average person entering the building, premises or property and shall contain language substantially similar to the following:

PURSUANT TO § 39-17-1359, THE OWNER/OPERATOR OF THIS PROPERTY HAS BANNED WEAPONS ON THIS PROPERTY, OR WITHIN THIS BUILDING OR THIS PORTION OF THIS BUILDING. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS PROHIBITION IS PUNISHABLE AS A CRIMINAL ACT UNDER STATE LAW AND MAY SUBJECT THE VIOLATOR TO A FINE OF NOT MORE THAN FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($500).

This is supposed to be the only proper notice and does not include the red circle with the slash. However, the fact that they post anything keeps me and my gun (and my money) out.

Some places post these signs to appease those that don't know any better knowing full well that those that do know better will ignore them, while some other places are ignorant of the law themselves & don't know how to correctly post.

Either way if your concealed know one should even notice & the most they can do is ask you to leave.

I think one other reason that businesses post the circle/slash sign is that they think it will remove their responsibility in the event that a bad guy comes in and shoots someone. They think they can just say "we don't allow guns so we are not responsible" etc... Of course, if my theory is true, then the businesses themselves would have to admit that the 'no guns' signs don't really keep guns out. Sorry to distract from the thread. The OP's letter to Value Vision was very well worded indeed.

Once they show their intent, they don't have to worry about me coming in. An anti-gun sign pisses me off, whether it's legal or not.

You pretty much summed it up. When bad stuff happens, and the lawsuits start flying, an attorney will look for the deepest pockets.

So, if here in Knoxville, they post a sign "You and your guns are welcome at West Town Mall"

You're a worthless little twerp with a gun and five dollars to your name. You shoot up the mall.

Does everybody sue you? Nooooooooooo........ The mall welcomed you and your gun. They are at fault.

That's the reason I'm against open carry. I like the Tennessee law because if the gun accidentally shows, you're not in violation of the law..but, I believe that discretion is the better part of valor.

You have a gun. The law allows you to have it. The state allows you to carry it. (please, no arguments about whether you are allowed or have some God given right)

As gun owners, we can go into histrionics about whether a gun with a circle and a slash is legal or not, and eventually we can get every business in the state to post the correct sign. Dang, we won. We made them put up legal signs.

Then you get to leave your gun in your car or violate the law.

So, you leave it in your car and it's stolen. See the post about whether your auto insurance or homeowner's covers that and the deductible and everything.
