Academy Sports in Chattanooga

The place is great. They are still stocking some handguns. They have a ton of ammo at decent prices. AR's were priced pretty good. This is definitely going to give Sportsmans a run for their money.

Have to check it out, but I do love that Sportsmans Warehouse

Don't let it give Sportsman's too good of a run for the money. Bass Pro did that here and Sportsman's closed down.

I was there yesterday, opening day, and you had to wait for a parking space. Nothing for reloading that I could find. It was hard trying to get close to the gun display case with so many people lined up. The gun department manager made trip after trip from the gun counter to the front door with stacks of sold handguns while I was there. I'm talking as many boxes as he could carry at one time. That was about noon, they had just been open a few hours. I don't know how long the selection & supply will last but they are off to a bang of a start.

You folks just need to get up earlier. I got there about 7:20 AM. About 3 cars waiting for the opening. We went in about 7:35 AM with about 6 cars in the parking lot. Nice store but just like other Academy stores I have been in. Looked around about 20 minutes, bought a few small items and left. Shotgun shell prices weren't very impressive (of course Sportsmans Warehouse prices aren't either). Handgun ammo prices were decent. I did hear an employee at the gun counter say they expected to get in a better variety of long guns in the next few weeks.

I did find out that the opening yesterday was considered the "soft opening". More of a training and working the bugs out opening. The grand opening is supposed to be in about two weeks. Maybe they will have some grand opening specials. They had so many employees working at that time of the morning asking me if they could help me that it was comical.

Nice store.

I think Sportsman's has a better gun dept., but it was too crowded around the gun counter to do much looking.

I was surprised that they don't carry any reloading components.

The one at Hamilton Place is going to be 6,000 ft. larger. Maybe they will have a little more space in their aisles.

Overall, it looked like a nice store.

I predict the demise of Dick's before Christmas.

That and Dicks is pretty lousy. Hopefully this will force them to get their act together. Hibbitt sports is the one that might as well close up shop now.

The competition will be great....Sportsman's Warehouse will have to work for that dollar now rather than benefit from being the only player in town.

I am suprized how much larger the store was than the Rivergate one in Nashville....the format was the same, but there was quite a bit more room. If that Hamilton Place one is going to trump that...I have no Idea what else they could have fit in there with respect to normal SKU.

Well, Dicks sucks for gun stuff but I shop there regularly for other sports stuff\wear.

You can't beat their tennis selection and prices for the area.

Sportsman's is on it's last leg. Has been for some time.

It's fallen victim to the same fate as every other sports store Chattanooga has ever had.

It's just not meant to be.

I'd bet Academy goes under after a few short years, too.

There's just been too many sports stores open and close around here for me to get excited :\

Every failure of big chain sports stores in Chattanooga was based upon failures of the parent company, and not because of the particular location.

Actually Sportsman's defied all sorts of historical landmarks in the past 18 months. One being the only company of its size to ever emerge from bankruptcy during a downward trend of a recession....ever. Chattanooga is currently the highest sale/sq. ft of the whole corporation.
