22-243 middlestead what the heck is it and who reloads it and has had experience with it, i dont reload but i am thinking of getting into it, i want a fast varmint gun but can i just buy ammo in 22-243 middlestead or is it a wildcat round? i have googled it and it was no help to me it just talked about how fast it was. any info is appreciated. the gun i am looking at is a custom mauser it has a timney trigger, a shiling barrel, it loooks good but if i buy it and cant get ammo a big stick would do just as good.

It is a wildcat round.. and it is very fast.. which equals to very short bbl life.. if you want to reload and find a round that is easy to load for and get your feet wet with it.. pick the 22-250.. don't have to buy custom dies, don't have to fireform the brass. The other fast one is .220 swift.. but it has fallen from grace because the bbl don't last very long..

If your up to a challange.. you could build a custom .17 remington. But really.. just go with the 22-250.

Yeah like FroggyOne2 said, the .22-243 Middlestead is a Wildcat round. The .22-250 and .220 Swift are not all that bad as varmint rounds. They shoot flat too. A friend had a Savage 110 in .22-250 that was a great groundhog and crow rifle. The Swift is not all that bad if you don't load the very fast loads. What gave the swift such a bad reputation was the load that was used. A 48 gr. bullet at a advertised 4140 fps. a real screamer.

I'd suggest you buy a 223, 22-250, 220 swift, or other rifle you can buy ammo for. Unless you know the guy really well and have a lot of faith in him, people who build custom rifles are hit or miss as to the quality of their work. There's more than likely a reason he's willing to part with this rifle. I wouldn't think of selling any of my tack drivers, but I would sell you some that have problems. I'd walk.

i trust the guy very well, the gun started as a mauser and he added the 1.25 stainless shillen bull barrel, barreled in 22 243 and the timney trigger and some kind of fancy bolt. the gun has no scope but the price he is asking for it seems like a real deal at $350 its hard to not look at it.

do the dies come with it if not they will cost over 100.00. i have a 22/243 can't do anything with it i can't do with a 22/250

Actually.. it would be more like 300.00 dollars for a good custom set of dies.
