Sawed off legality?

I have an old 410 that I'm thinking about sawing off to a shorter length just for ease of handling. Its basically my snake gun and it would be easier without the 24 inch barrel.

What is the law regarding sawed off shotguns and barrel length? Is it illegal to shorten the barrel of a shotgun to say 12-14 inches? If it is illegal, then how can guns like the Taurus Judge be legal at all?

Shotguns: 18" minimum. Federal law.

The Judge is a pistol, not a rifle/shotgun. It would be illegal to put a rifle butt on it.

You'd be doing yourself a favor to go 18.5", even most of the major manufactures are giving themselves a little breathing room these days.

The Judge is a 45 Long Colt revolver, that just happens to be able to shoot a .410 shell. IIRC, it is also not a smooth-bore barrel. Which is the way the law is written.

Thanks Gents. This agrees with all the advice I've been given elsewhere. Not sure I understand why, but I'll pick something else for my next project.

Get a tax stamp and put a 4" barrel on the shotgun, then you can dual wield your shotgun and your Judge, slaying mighty cobras.
