Corbon 185 JHP from my my USP Compact 45 really make a milk jug full of water go squish. My daughter nicked the census man with one and he ain't been back either.

Glad to see you come into the 21st century Ernest T., of course I always enjoyed rock throwin' myself..:P

what is "bonded ammo"?

Basically means the jacket wont separate from the core once it enters the BG.

Commonly, instead of simply forming the jacket around a lead core (or casting the core inside a formed jacket), a bonded bullet contains a thin, porous liner which adheres the jacket to the lead, preventing them from separating under violent expansion... this promotes weight-retention and directly results in increased penetration. The liner is usually something similar to paper, glued to the jacket on the inside... or it may sometimes pimply be a chemical bonding agent (glue) coating the inside of the jacket prior to filling the core.

Is this "bonded" thing commonly posted on the ammunition box?

Thanks defining it for me.

Wouldn't all defensive ammo be bonded then?

Not all defensive ammo is 'bonded'... as a matter of fact, not all bullets in a given line of ammo which are normally thought to be bonded, really are.

Federal HSTs, some are bonded, some are not.

Remington Golden Sabres, some are bonded, some are not.

Etc...

Cor-Bon's JHP lineup is not bonded, hence their reputation for fragmentation and limited penetration.

Speer Golt-Dots are bonded, as are the Winchester SXT bullets used in the SXT line and the Ranger ammo (I'm pretty sure they are all bonded, but I may be mistaken). Silvertips are not bonded... and of course the WWB JHPs aren't.

thats what i thought

Speer Golt-Dots are bonded

this is what i use most of the time.

if i do use anything else,it will be federal jhp which are bonded also

i think i have seen it posted on some boxs as bjhp, but it will be listed in the description area of (insert bnand) on ammunitiontogo

I've shot telephone books and have had some rounds shuck the jacket. The slug didn't penetrate very far, and was more mangled than expanded. Rounds that didn't shuck the jacket penetrated much farther and expanded to a nice mushroom shape.

I looked at the Georgia Arms offering and noticed it is GI 185gn. I have several thousand rounds of the same or similar. What I have is match ammo, TZZ head stamp with a semi wadcutter shaped bullet nose. The point here is that it will not feed reliably in all of the .45s I own. The OAL is shorter and it leads to the "three point jam." I would make sure of the configuration before buying. When it works it is very accurate.

I have an email in to winchester about the bullets used in the USA hp's. I remain unconvinced that winchester would make a special run of cheaper hp's for low volume ammo...I figure they used what they already had. If i get a reply i'll post it. In looking around, I did find this:

I just looked at the box of Federal Hyda-Shoks for the .357 and it makes no note of it being bonded.

Hydra-Shoks are a pretty old (relatively) design... I've never heard of them being bonded. Federal got around this by loading those cartridges rather weak, so that there was little chance of core separation. They do expand wonderfully though... which is why they worked so well, even at lower velocities.

Can anyone recommend a good round for ar a compact .45 with a 3.5" barrel?

I've read that the 185 grain JHP is a good choice.

Where wouldyou suggest buying ammo in Nashville?

If you want to buy it at a storefront. There are several gun-shops in Nashville... one local proprietor is a member here (The Rabbi, of East Side Gun Shop). He can tell you what brands of .45acp he's got in 185gr... (615) 258-4080
