I'm looking for a round to carry. My current choice is a Speer Gold Dot 200gr. +P but it's becoming impossible to find local. This will be for CCW fired from a 4" barrel. What do you guys suggest?

Corbon DPX is harder to find locally than Speer Gold Dot, but that's what I'd suggest.

I carry 230+p gold dots ,but Rangers and Hyda-shocks are good. I would probably go with the Rangers. Its hard to beat a Gold dot. Any good bonded bullet.

Walmart winchester 230gr USA hollow points is a good choice.

Gold dots are probably the best hp's money can buy, but speer ammo is expensive. I'd stay away from hydra-shocks, they actually suck pretty bad. Although at 230 grains, it probably doesn't make a whole lot of difference if the bullet hangs together or not

I carry Federal HSTs. Pretty good round from what I've seen.

Thanks for the replies, I've shot DPX a little and I like it. I found some 230gr. Gold Dots today and I picked up a box of DPX as well to try out. I appreciate all of the suggestions.

Another Hornady TAP recommendation. I have shot Corbon ammo in my 458 AR and I would qualify it as excellent. Bill Wilson at Wilson Combat shoots the Corbon and I reckon he could afford to shoot pretty much anything he wants to.

I'm getting ready to start working up reloads in .45 so I think once I get a good load data, I'll switch to that. After you shoot a couple of hundred of your own loadings you really start to trust them. I shoot better in my big bore rifles now that I don't buy much factory. Of late I just shot factory to generate brass and practice. Now that I'm comfortable with my reloads I'll probably just buy brass when these are to stretched to use anymore.

I have a box of Federal Hydra-Shocks for CCW use. Haven't had to use them, so I can't say how good they are lol. But Hydra-Shocks are supposed to be really good. About $25 for a 20rd box at Walmart.

I haven't ordered from them yet, but a fellow member here recommended them. They have great prices for HP's, including CCI. (Unless someone else is making Gold Dots.)

Oops - just noticed they don't have 200 gr.

Ball.

When it comes to .45acp it doesn't much matter. All of them are likely to be effective. I've got some Taurus copper bullets in the shop that one member here tells me was the only deer he ever killed with a 1911.

I would not recommend Hydra-Shoks. They are getting impossible to find too.

+1...the .45acp hydra-shoks that i've fooled around with have issues. Although, anything in 230gr .451 that comes out of the bore is likely to work.

Speer gold dot's are about the best hp bullet. The speer loading works works well in 230gr.

I think hard ball is ok as long as you have a good idea what it will do penetration wise. Over ball I'd pick a handloaded 250gr semi-wadcutter I think if they feed ok.

A good budget choice is this...darn good ammo for the money...I'll bet the bullet is bonded too (get em at walmart):

I really like the Corbon 200 grain JHP if it will feed in your pistol. If this will not feed then the 230 gr Hydrashock works well and feeds easier in most pistols.

If I were to use ball ammo for defensive purposes, I would prefer to use a 185gr load simply because the lighter bullet will (over)penetrate less than the heavier one with the same frontal cross-section.
