Got a killer deal from a guy that works for me today and came home with 2 Springfield Garands. I know I can request info from the CMP, but I also know there are a few guys on here who will probably also know. My receiver serial #'s are pretty low from what I've found online, just wanting a second opinion on when they are from. numbers are 1,607,664 and 1,648,172.

There are different numbers on the bolt, which I'm assuming at one time matched, but not sure. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

From the info I got from the books "The M1 Garand:WWII" and "The M1 Garand Serial Numbers and Data Sheets". The 1,607,664 was made May 1943. And the 1,648,172 was made June of 1943.

The good thing about Garands is that just about everything on them is marked with the manufacturer. If the part was made by Springfield it will be marked SA, Winchester is WRA, International Harvester is IH, and Harrington Richardson is marked HRA. You can look on the bolt, the op. rod, the trigger group, and the barrel and check to see if they match (now days most dont totally match and if they do they bring premium money, all matching guns are called correct grade). The barrel should be marked with a number after the letter code, this number is the year the barrel was made. An example would be SA53, which is a Springfield barrel made in 1953.

The Garand is a great weapon. I have war era Springfield and a post war HRA. Everytime I hold them I feel like I am holding a piece of history. Sorry for being so long winded but I love my Garands and like to talk about them. Congrats on the good deal. Now buy as much ammo as you can afford for them.

on the barrel right behind the front sight there ought to be a date

And on the barrel next to the operating rod there ought to be a date.

My HRA mixmaster is from May of 55 on receiver and barrel, but the trigger group, bolt and stock are Springers. I used a little steel wool on the stock and it brought out the WW2 Springer cartouche mark.

Like Jason said, get ammo.

06 Surplus Ammo, that is it there is none anywhere else. You are allowed ten cases

a year and they will sign you up for required membership about thirty five bucks.

get all you can because turn around time on mail order is 2-6 months. Cmp has

a book there they will let you use to check your serial# and it will tell you what

parts gun came with as they all have lot numbers on them. Bring a high limit

credit card because of all the stuff in store you will want.

Just keep in mind,..modern '06 will be hard on the Garand,.. Port Pressure is the real issue.. Hornady is offering a load these days I hear

I just hand load my own to spec. there are numerous websites to the care and feeding of this grand old rifle.. Fulton Armory has an excellent FAQ section..

Mine is a '43 receiver with a '57 barrel

The numbers you are referring to are probably Drawing lot numbers here is a taste.. http://www.northcapepubs.com/m1gar.htm

alabama sales tax is pretty much a wash vs. the shipping charge for the CMP cans of ammo. Therefore is you aren't planning a trip anytime soon, just go ahead and place an order. Only issues is you won't know when to expect it, which if you go there you will for sure leave with your car loaded down.

Bolt numbers are drawing numbers and heat lot numbers, no relation to serial number. Only will see serial number at the heel of the receiver. Definitely check the barrel date right side barrel when you retract and lock back the op-rod handle.

M1 Garand the rifle of rifles! My 12/54 barrel dated SA M1 will hit a CD lying in the sand at 200 yds from prone.
