Why do you not ship?

Recommended Posts

I see so many times in the Firearms Classifieds that members state they will not ship.

I was wondering why you do not or will not ship?

Shipping in state is SO EASY and Cheap.

Most times you can ship cheaper than you can drive 70 miles one way.

Just wanted to know from those who dont ship :P. Im not looking to flame anyone. I am just curious.

It is the fear of getting burned. You have to receive payment in a non-cash transaction. I do not know about you, but I cannot accept credit cards, I do not know much about money orders, and checks, both personal, and cashiers, can be fraudulent.

So instead of the risk, I prefer FTF in CASH. This way I get them to sign a firearm bill of sale and get their drivers license # too.

Handguns are the problem.

Can't use USPS.

If you play by UPS or FedEX rules, have to do overnight and has to go to licensed recipient; if you don't inform them and send another way, good luck on collecting any insurance claim if it's "lost".

If it was someone here who has been an established member and I have had some sort of positive interaction with prior to the gun sale I would probably trust them to mail a "good" check.

I once sold a rifle to a fine member here who lives quite a ways from Knoxville. He paid in installments, I received a couple of installments before sending the rifle and he sent the rest after I sent the rifle. The rifle was hand delivered by another member not involved in the sale other than being a delivery guy in the deal. I never worried a moment about it and I doubt the buyer gave it much worry either.

It's all about having trust between the buyer and seller.

+1 Hassle and cost. Dealing with FexEx or UPS concerning guns can be very difficult. Mainly because they don't know their own policies or the laws most of the time concerning non-FFL's on in state shipping. I've also run into the same problem with people buying getting nervous for the same reasons. It's just easier FTF.

+1, I have taken a person check from members here.

For me it's all about convience. I don't mind shipping. but.. it can be a hassle sometimes. so there are times when I wont ship.

Not only that. I don't play by all the "rules" and some folks don't like that.

Yes. you can ship long and short guns to another TN resident with no FFL.

Some carrier specific rules apply "should you follow them"

I never was one to follow all the rules. I march to the beat of my own drum.

To LEGALLY ship a handgun to another TN resident, and according to UPS policy, you have to ship via UPS Overnight Air and declare that it is a handgun......and it's EXPENSIVE.....around $30-$35. I believe you can ship via FedEx too, but it's a lot more complicated. I went in FedEx once with a gun to ship and wound up walking out and driving down the road to UPS because they required some kind of paperwork to be filled out. You can ship a long gun to another TN resident via UPS ground or the USPS, but you also have to declare what it is.

I would highly recommend that anyone wanting to ship a handgun or a long gun within the state follow all the laws and carrier policies pertaining to shipping a gun. There's just too much that could go wrong if you don't.

Who should i use to ship? Do i have to tell them its a gun or can i just throw it in a long box and send it on its way?

Long guns are easy. they can go ground or even US Postal service. You are suppose to notify them and request signature on delivery.

Handguns can get sticky.. The right way to ship a handgun person to person is via UPS or FedEx next day AIR with verbal notification and adult signature required.

Yes you can ship any LONG-GUN to another TN resident legally ,but if the buyer buys ammo from you you are required to shipthe ammo seperate the easiest and cheapest way is use the post office, but as far as hand guns you can't ship them legally without using an FFL. Im not saying that you can Im just saying its not legal.

This is not correct. you can legally ship hanguns resident to resident of the same state. your just limited as to the carrier used.

This is a common misconception.
