My kids LOVE lighting bugs. The keep them in jars (one night limit) and sometimes necklaces. Of course these days I could probably be arrested for that. :P

I remember my 6 yr old running around catching them when she was 18 mo old. Good times.

FYI, scientists and researchers pay money for East Tennesse lighting bugs. Apparently we have the best.

And here's the interesting part: The chemical in those bugs that scientists and researchers pay money for has nothing to do with them lighting up.

BTW, Lightning Bugs this early tells me it's gonna be a long hot summer. :P

Yeah, that and the fact that we (Memphis at least) skipped Spring weather and went straight to Summer weather before the first week of April. :P

It did that here too, but that's okay... it makes up for last year, when all we got was one super-extended wet spring, and no summer at all.

I'm probably wrong about this but I always thought the name Lightning Bugs was a name that most country folks used growing up. The more common name was Fireflies; or so I thought.

when the kids were little and caught them they would smear the glowing part of the bugs on their faces like war paint. Half the kids on the street would be running around with glowing faces, the other half running in terror over the carnage.

I do that too....umm... when I was a kid did that.

They are fun when they hit the windshield and you turn on the wiper, smears the glowing part across the windshield!
