Transporting a long gun?

Wasn't quite sure where to post this, but here it goes....if it needs to be moved, feel free.

I found a few threads about this using search, but nothing too recent...so I thought I would post just to make sure. With no HCP, are the laws on transporting a long gun the same as a handgun(unloaded, seperated from the ammo)?

can you have ammo and firearms in the trunk but not inside the gun???

I don't think there is a clear cut answer with the law, but just to be safe, keep them as far away from each other as possible.

Currently, if you do not have a Handgun Carry permit, it is illegal to carry a long gun and ammo "within reach". Generally that is understood to mean if the firearm is in the cab of a pickup, the ammunition must be in the bed, or if in a car, the ammunition must be in the trunk. Otherwise, it can be construed to be a violation of "intent to go armed" if both are within reach.

HB 2567, which has been voted out of the both the House and Senate and is now on the Governors desk will relax that somewhat, allowing for carry of both in the same compartment as long as the weapon is unloaded, and no loaded "clip" or magazine is "in close proximity" to the weapon.

Basically, this is set up to allow hunters to carry their rifle or shotgun from home to the field, with ammunition in the riding compartment of a vehicle. As it stands now, that is a violation if one does not have a HCP.

So if you DO have a TN carry permit...then you ARE allowed to have a loaded shotgun or rifle in the vehicle??

Zulu Cowboy

With permit, rounds in the magazine, tube or removable is permisable, none in the chamber. If a threat is perceived, OK to then load the chamber.
