m&pc9 - If you cannot click on the link, the picture shows the USS Ashland 48, Landing Ship, Dock, sitting in the background. In the foreground is a burnt out pirate skiff.

Apparently, it did not go well for the pirates...

Pirates "we are going to need a bigger boat"

If they would let the Navy do that about once a week, that crap would be over with real soon!

People on a skiff shot at the USS Ashland.

The Ashland shot back. The skiff caught fire and the people abandoned the skiff.

:hat:

It would have made a cool video to show them dropping their stern gate and deploying one of these….

Gator Navy. :D

Those were after my time. I was a machinist on LPD-15. During landings/operations I was a Mike Boat Engineer. :D

Wow! An old antique LSD. 3-inch 50's last I saw.

Nice shooting!

These Pirates have been doing this since the time of Thomas Jefferson fighting

the Barbary Pirates. Sink them all! Go NAVY!

Armament two (mk15 mod1) Phalanx (CIWS) 20 mm Vulcan cannon gun mounts, two (mk16) 25 mm Bushmaster chain gun mounts, six .50 cal machine guns

If they don't have the upgraded Phalanx (Block 1B) they probably used the 25mm's and the M2 .50 cals on that skiff.

The Block 1B upgrade has a camera mounted to the side of the raydome of the Phalanx that is conected to a control console that is in the CIC.

This console is basically a remote control system that allows the operator to use the video feed that has a crosshair to manually fire the system at surface targets. Nothing like firing 25mm at 75 rounds a second.

USS Cole was the first ship in the fleet to get this upgraded system after the bombing in 2000.

USN and USMC have been putting pirates to sleep since Jefferson was president. Hopefully the Navy, Marines, and other NATO forces decide to crush their ports of call in Somalia. They've been identified - it's just a question of whether or not "international will" (whatever that is) decides it's time for them to go.
