ghost (gst)

n.

1. The spirit of a dead person, especially one believed to appear in bodily likeness to living persons or to haunt former habitats.

2. The center of spiritual life; the soul.

3. A demon or spirit.

4. A returning or haunting memory or image.

5.

a. A slight or faint trace: just a ghost of a smile.

b. The tiniest bit: not a ghost of a chance.

6. A faint, false image, as:

a. A secondary image on a television or radar screen caused by reflected waves.

b. A displaced image in a photograph caused by the optical system of the camera.

c. A false spectral line caused by imperfections in the diffraction grating.

d. A displaced image in a mirror caused by reflection from the front of the glass.

It seems like almost anything that does not have a easy explanation can be a ghost.

While I have never experienced first hand anything supernatural, I keep an open mind. I don't believe or disbelieve. There are many things in this world that are beyond what our simple minds can comprehend.

Yeah, just pointing out irony where I find it.

The Bible has more supernatural magic in it than Harry Potter books.

Don't see why ghosts should be excluded.

- Oh "happy to irritate atheists, too" Shoot

No reason to degrade Harry Potter now, is there?

i am a must see it to believe in it person and i have never seen it, however i would probably try and explain it away logically if the situation ever presents its self.

Guys, I'm a Christian but I believe there are some things which go on that defy explanation.

Several years ago I was managing a warehouse off of Neyland Dr in Knoxville. Several people there including myself had seen and heard some weird stuff but didn't discuss it because we thought we would be made fun of.

One afternoon, I was finishing up and out of the corner of my eye caught a glimpse of a black shadowy smoke like shape enter the building thru the drive thru door just outside the office and move purposely towards the back of the building. I never said a word just looked back at the paperwork I was working on and told myself that my eyes were playing tricks on me. A few seconds later a young lady working in the same office, slowly got up from her desk, walked over to mine an whispered: Mike, did you just see that ??

Later on I learned that these were called shadow people..go figure ???

It's a tough question. I have had several unexplainable experiences. Certainly, some would explain these types of experiences as ghostly. Were ghosts responsible? I have no definitive evidence. Could ghosts be responsible? It's as good as any other explanation I can come up with. Supernatural? It's just a word we use for things we have no other way to explain.

If one believes in a soul as being a continuation of consciousness or even residual energy after life, the concept of ghosts or spirits is not very different. They just show up in different places. Or do they?

There's much about our universe that is yet to be understood. Heck, there's much about our planet that is still not understood. New species are discovered all the time. Most of our planet is underwater and we've only been able to explore a small percentage of it. Are things happening that we don't or can't understand? You bet. Am I ready to blame it on ghosts? Not yet. Can I rule out ghosts? Nope.

Good question Mike. I voted yes because I believe in the possibility. I believe our beliefs create our reality. Or is it just our perception of reality? Question everything, accept nothing. This would make for a good campfire discussion.

While we are on the subject of things that go bump in the night, my mamaw was famous for the stories she used to tell us when we were kids. She had stories about witches and warlocks, ghosts and Woolybuggers, which were some kind of creature that lived in the forest. Many years later I was watching a show on cable and learned that woolybugger was what Appalachian folks called their version of bigfoot. Mamaw died a long time before cable was around

My friend, I only wish I had recorded some of the stories of "hants" as my mamaaw called them

Back in the late 1930's my papaw was killed and because of his job, my mamaw was able to buy a large farm here in Sevier County with the insurance money. When my mamaw my Dad ( who was a small child at the time) and his brothers and sisters came to live upon the farm: there were several sharecroppers already working on it. Most all of them recieved mamaw and her brood well but there was one lady much more outspoken than the others and her name was Mary Long.

As the story goes Ms Long was very demanding and this caused several disagreements between my mamaw and her but one really sticks out.

A few years after my family took possession of the farm, my great uncle and his family built a home and started to farm it as well. Shortly aftrwards his young son got sick and grew weaker and weaker by the day, doctors were called in medecine and treatment were prescribed but the child grew weaker and closer to death.

A traveling preacher examined him and explained that the child was withering away because at night a witch or warlock was visiting and transforming the child and riding him as you or I might ride a horse. His remedy for this was to draw a picture of the suspected witch/warlock, cut up a silver dime, replace the shot from a shotgun shell with the silver and shoot the picture.

My Great Uncle followed the instructions and his child started getting better almost overnight. Several days later he ran into Ms Long and her face was covered with running sores that she could not explain

I'm not gonna go on unless someome is interested but I'll finish it if anyone wants to hear the rest

B4 you ask I'm not making this up, my mamaw swore by this story

Daddyo, if your reasoning for not believing in ghosts is because of christianity and the bible, then how do you explain the Witch of Endor in 1st Samuel? The witch that Saul seeks out who subsequently summons the spirit of the deceased Samuel.

1st Samuel 28:3-25

I personally have never had any personal experience to make me believe in ghosts, but I am a person who is very open to possibilities and doesn't like to rule something out unless there is concrete reason to deny it to be possible.

Been on the planet 46 years, been to Korea, Central America, Canada and a good deal of the lower 48 and a stop off in Alaska. Been hunting, camping, patrolling, sitting, and even some sitting and drinking at all hours but haven't seen or heard anything I couldn't explain.

I just ain't that lucky I guess. Still waiting on that first UFO or ghost.

I dunno.

I only wish I could tell the story as she did, Ironically enough her birthday was the week b4 Christmas and thats when we had our big family get together

Back to the story ..

My Great uncle, his name was Aubrey Cusick was desperate to find a cure for his ailing child, and did as he was told and saw the resulting damage which hed been wrought upon Ms Long, Aubrey again visited the traveling preacher to ensure that his child would continue healing. The preacher explained to him that although in Laymens terms he had simply shot a drawing but in reality he had cast a spell upon the witch himself which would prevent her from harming anyone else in his family. He explained that the catch was that if Ms Long could persuade he or anyone else in the household to give her or let her borrow any personal possession what so ever the spell would be broken.

He also warned that Ms Long would use animals called familers to spy on them, in this case a frog.

This frog supposedly would hang around where mamaw would wash the familes clothes and got to be a such a nuisance that she would have to push it out of her way with her foot, up till the moment she grew tired of it and would make a comment about killing it and then it would hide as if understanding her comments.

Eventually, Ms Long persuaded one of the younger ladies in the family to loan hera scarf and like magic: her scars and sores were mended the next day. A short time of peace and contentment was enjoyed by all until Mary Long set her eyes upon mamaw's prize Jersey milk cow but thats another story

Bluemax my brother, you missed your calling...you should have been a writer, because you know how to put a great story, like your Mamaw's, into spellbinding words that keeps us on the edge of our seats!

BTW, can't wait to hear the story of the cow...of course, at your leisure.

Thanks Bearman, All good jokes and joshin aside, Mamaw Delius could tell a tale and did many that would make a grown man turn white. I'm not a very good typer but if anyone has interest I'll post a couple of other tales. One that I mentioned earlier was about a young fox hunter who had a encounter with a wolly bugger in Sevier County. Many years later, I learned that Woolybugger was an accepted name for what most of us know as Bigfoot. Not sayin that I've seen him or believe just relaying a good tale :)

When I was stationed up in Maine, myself and a buddy of mine took our sons on an overnight camp out in the woods behind his house. That night we were sitting around the fire and had a pretty good time scareing the kids with some ghost stories from the local area. After everyone had gone to sleep, we were woke up by the tent shaking and my buddy complaining that someone had just kicked him the back. We both jumped up and ran out expecting to see the culprit but all we saw was fog. Thick fog. After looking around thinking that our wives were playing a joke on us we went back to sleep. We never did find out who or what that was that shook the tent and kicked my buddy. Still had a good time though.
