Memphis area shooting

I joined in January. It was not a decision that I came too easily as I do not have much expendable income. But I pay a lot of money for guns that I can not shoot unless I go out there. It takes me between 15 and 20 minutes to get there and I can always get a lane. I've met some really nice people and learned while out there. Overall, I don't regret it at all.

P.S. If you join in January like I did, you can break up the fees. I only paid 530 to join. The bad part is that I still have to re-up in June to the tune of another 240 bucks.

I'm new to gun ownership and still waiting on my HCP, so please pardon my ignorance if this is a stupid question. However, unless you are going to shoot something other than handguns, is there a purpose to joining these clubs?

I've gone to both Range USA and Range Master (where I took my HCP class) to practice.

Range USA is great for practice and training. They also have some matches. But the private ranges will have more matches, different types of lanes, targets, poppers, steel plates, etc. They compliment each other. But you should be able to keep your skills with a public range. After you get more into shooting you will be like us and want to have access to a nice outdoor range.

I like outdoor shooting much better than indoor. More freedom to practice what you want, you can shoot 180 degrees, as opposed to all rounds going one direction, different types of targets (steel, etc), cleaner, not as loud, nobody's brass hitting you in the face, no one hassling you about drawing from a holster unless you've taken their tactical pistol ninja level 3 course.

After the $400 initiation fee, MSSA is $20/month. You probably can't go to RUSA or Rangemaster twice a month for $20.

Yeah I did. And it was completely worth it.

Deerslayer gets it. I paid alot of money to join but feel that I have already gotten my money's worth. There are just so many positives to it that didn't make sense not to join.

You can visit with a member up to two times before they expect you to join.

I went once with my FIL and I'm glad I did. The 'tard on the golf cart helped make my mind up and I didn't end up spending my hard earned money on a membership there. I've been looking at Desoto's club. Thinking about trying them out.

They are sticklers for the rules out there. Safety first and all that. And there is a guy that rides around on a golf cart that can be a bit overbearing at times. I try not to let him ruin my afternoon of shooting and everything works out for me. DeSoto is not an option for me. Again, this was just my choice and I am not asking anyone else to make it too. And I'm not insulting anyone for their choices.

With a wife, a son, and a daughter who all shoot too and we shoot rifles and shotguns also, MSSA was a no brainer for me and my family.

do tell...

Sorry, just now saw the request for more info. To make a long story short(ish);

Went one time (first and only time out there for me) with my FIL. We were the only people out there (on the entire range) at the time. My FIL went downrange to put up targets while I unloaded the guns / ammo from my truck. While carrying two rifle cases to the shooting bench, I stepped onto the "do not cross while someone is downrange" line. I did not step over it, but the toes of my right foot stepped onto the line. The only firearms around were two rifles fully enclosed in cases. The "tard on the golf cart" popped up from who knows where and started yealling and going insane about the rules and stepping over the line and making an utter and complete ass of himself.

At first, the smartass in me began to come out, but we were already there and I really wanted to shoot, so I just stood there staring at him like the tard nugget he was until he was done. I then turned and walked away.

My FIL has been a member out there for a loooong time, but after that day, he said he hasn't been back since. He joined the Desoto club and started shooting there. I'm not sure if he has renewed his MSSA membership or not. I can tell you that after that experience, I wouldn't join if they waived every one of the fees they have. I understand that safety is paramount, but you have to use a little common sense in dealing with folks. A simple "hey watch out for that line" would have sufficed if he felt that something just had to be said.

Dont know who was on the golf cart that day, but anytime I have seen someone cross that magical line they where always told very nicely to please stay behind the line while people are down range. You must of got a guy whos wife was in a bad mood that morning.

Must have. Like I said, I understand that safety is very important. Had I been actually handling a firearm, or even actually stepped over the line, I could see a friendly reminder. But the response I got was what you'd expect after taking aim at a person.
