Beaver

My next door neighbor has some land in North Mississippi that has a rapidly growing beaver population, and he has asked me to come help him cull a few of the toothy varmints.

My question for ya'll is this: is there still a bounty for beaver, and what can I do with them after I have sent them on to the great beaver pond in the sky?

All righty guys.....lets keep this on topic about the animal. I know it is tempting, and we are weak creatures, but lets do this for the ladies that are members of TGO, the sake of the original poster, and his serious question.

Ok. I imagine beavers would be good eating. They are secretive and shy animals though. I've never actually seen many out in daylight. Trapping would probably be easier and more successful. I find chewed trees and downed trees a lot but see few beavers.

Garufa,

Thanks for the links. It hadn't even occured to me that there might be some legal issues, but it appears I'm good.

As to the other posters...hehehe :tinfoil:

My neighbor says it will have to be around dusk, but a spotlight should help. Now what to shoot them with, 17HMR, 308, 223....decisions, decisions:drama:

you are correct. I went to the link and it says....

SHOOTING HOURS

Legal shooting hours for resident game are one-half (1/2) hour before sunrise to one-half (1/2) hour after sunset. Legal shooting hours for migratory birds are one-half (1/2) hour before sunrise to sunset.

LEGAL GAME

Raccoon, fox, opossum, beaver, and bobcats may be legally hunted at night, with or without the use of a light, and with dogs, except during the spring turkey season. The hunting of predatory animals shall be restricted to the open seasons for hunting any game animal or bird, using only the firearms, ammunition, primitive weapon or archery equipment legal for use during that open season. Landowners, agricultural leaseholders or their designated agents may take predatory animals year-round on lands owned or leased by them. For legal deer see "Hunting Deer" for legal sizes and bag limits.

My great uncle used to cook them like a roast. Not sure about MS, but in AL there was some money allotted for bounties and when the money was gone, then the bounties had to wait until the following year. I had a section of my parent's freezer for beaver tails.
