SKS issue...any advice?

Finally got a chance to get out and shoot the yugo. Rifle fired fine and was more accurate than I expected.

However, I notice that during operation gas tube assembly lever keep poping up out of the grove (this didn't disrupt function). After breaking down the rifle to clean it, I noticed that rear of the upper hand guard was dented from making contact with the gas tube assembly lever pin.

Anyone know why this would happen? The upper hand guard was properly seated, as far I know.

What can I do to overcome this issue? I was thinking of slightly filing the housing of the upper hand guard so that the contact isn't so direct, but want to inquire with you guys before I do.

Thanks in advance!

can you post pics of what is happening?

I would not file on anything without being more sure, even then I don't think I would do it.

On mine it takes near extreme effort to move the gas tube lever up for disassembly.

Is the lever bent a small amount? If so there is a chance that the firing of the gun may be camming the lever up some.

This is my guess. Bent enough to where the "ball" section of the lever isn't engaging the detent on the receiver very well.

I will work on getting some pics.

Yes. It's bent and not engaging the detent well.

What should I do now?

+1. I have to pry the level up on my yugo. Seems a little judicious bending is in order.

Also, the lever is bent inward to the the site and therefore not seating well in the detent. How far should in be bent outward to ensure a proper fitting? Meaning should it be snug and tight, or should it be a loose?

Forgive my ignorance on this, but don't want to do anymore damage than has already been done.

A little googling tells me this is a fairly common problem. OE wood furniture or Tapco stuff? I'd just use a pair of needle-nose pliers to bend it back, but do so carefully. You'll likely have to disassemble the rifle to bend both ears. You may also use a small punch/drift to deepen the bosses on the ears. I think the lever should move freely once disengaged from the gas block. If it wobbles, you may need to re-buck the rivet to tighten it.
