Taurus PT1911 Beating Session

Took the my 1911 out today to burn up some leftover ammo I had and put her through the paces. Ran around 200 rounds of Remington ball, 50 Remington HP's, and 50 rounds of WWB HP's.

Shot her bone dry just to see how'd she'd run and she ran like a champ, other than all the double feeds, FTL's, FTF's, and FTE's.

But before you start Taurus bashing, it was engineered that way. I didn't want to just go throw lead down range, I wanted to train. So I ran a ton of failure drills by loading empties into the mags.

It was quite eye opening how rusty I've gotten with them, but I've worked out all the kinks now and am back to a comfortable level of competency and speed. And I also noticed the terrible anticipatory flinch I have, I shoot steel so I had never noticed shooting low. So I worked on that as well, using the old shell on front sight trick.

Got it a bit better but I need a lot more dry fire practice to iron it all the way out. But I'm happy with what I've accomplished today, and I highly recommend everyone go out and do failure drills to make sure that you can react appropriately and quickly in a failure situation.

That is great training that everyone who carries for self defense should practice. However, what is "the old shell on front sight trick"? How does that keep you from shooting low?

Take an empty and place it on the front sight while dry firing. Any movement during the dry firing cycle will cause the empty to fall off.

It helps to identify any bad shooting habits.

Interesting. Never heard of doing that. I assume it points out more of your muscle use / control issues versus flinching. I wouldn't expect most folks to flinch with an unloaded gun.

kb4ns, that's exactly what it does, but a by product of it is increased muzzle control without mental/physically thinking about avoiding the flinch. It does a fantastic job of it.

The Taurus 1911 is a hoss of a gun. No Ftes or ftfs in couple thousand rounds that I put through mine ( it was my first gun). I regret trading it off.

I might not be able to balance an empty case on my pistol without even squeezing the trigger. Natural shake you know.

Gotta admit that while it's still kinda early (maybe 300rds so far) I've got nothing bad to say about my PT1911.

This session brings the count to 3500 rounds through her.

I'm very happy with it, and other than when I want to make it jam, it has never had an issue.
