I found a very cool thread

Weird findings in the woods - www.ifish.net

Although one post about a guy throwing sticks at a dead midget is funny, I thought it would be more interesting to have stories that a more "local"

I've only ran across an old abandoned home, a K-Bar knife, and a fishing pole, nothing as weird as some of those stories though.

What have you guys ran across?

"I found a bible on time laying on the ground in a swamp. I was 16 at the time and it was in good shape. I still have it strange find."

What were you doing laying on the ground in a swamp?!

Couldn't resist that one.

I have run across a gun safe that had been pryed open, I notified the park ranger. When ever I find an old chimney in the woods I like to look around. I look for the well and the outhouse, so I don't fall in. I have never found much more than so old bottles. I do like to wonder who lived there and when, then try to get an idea of how the homestead was layed out. Sometimes you find old rose bushes and other plants that they planted. The Tennessee countryside has lots of old chimneys.

Found a wallet in White Oak Creek, near Zenith (Big South Fork) a few years ago. ID & credit cards, no $. I contacted the guy. He had lost the wallet almost a year prior, while taking photos of the area.

We arranged to meet in Knoxville. I returned the wallet, and he rewarded me with a sample of his photography, nicely framed and everything.

For some reason I've always been drawn to the old houses, or places where they've been such as the old chimneys. I don't know why, because I'm not very old, but for some reason when I'm in these areas it's almost like I can feel what it was like to live back then.

As far as other things I've found in the woods, I once found an old lever action .22 rifle. It was by far one of the best shooting .22's I've ever fired. After some time I was finally able to track down the owner of it, who at the time didn't even realize he had lost it. I also stumbled upon a good bow release, which no one ever claimed and I still use to this day. I also came across an area in the woods that I use to hunt on that seemed to be a place where all the animals went to die. There were a mixture of deer bones, coyote bones, and other types. Some of the deer heads still had the antlers even. My first thought was that maybe someone was dumping them there, but it would be nearly impossible to get any vehicle to this area, and it would be a long way to drag something just to dump it off.

I haven't come across anything lately that was interesting much though. Seems like all the woods left in this area have already been combed over by someone.

Ok mom. She has a masters in English and I grew up being corrected for everything. Guess it didn't do much good huh.

About the only thing I ever found in the woods was a bunch of hardcore Porno Mags. Very enlightening for a 12 year old! (Might still have them!)

No pics of pics, didn't happen!

Never found any dead drunks (thankfully) but the occasional pot patch is pretty common. Found an old still when I was a young fellow with my dad, must have been 30 years ago.

On my place now, the owner from long ago was known to make a bottle or two hundred. After touring the Jack Daniels Distillery and being told the residue given off by the stills would turn the nearby trees and such black over time, I figured out the old man was a volume distiller. We have one hollow that all the trees and rocks are black, just like at JD's.

My dad had a Rolex he bought while in Korea during the war, he lost it rabbit hunting years ago, sure wish I could have found that.

Sasquatch feeding grounds? :D

I found an old cabin that had fallen in near some old mine shafts that had filled with water. There were a few neat old cans and bottles, but they were mostly broken and dented/rusted.

I was hiking with some friends in the mid-90's at Big South Fork, up near the Charit Creek Hostel. We were going to camp along the trail, and dusk was approaching. I was out in front a couple hundred yards, and as I rounded a corner near the creek crossing, I started seeing some scattered items lying on the ground. Some make-up. Then some keys. Combs, etc. As I kept walking, I came upon a couple of credit cards and a drivers license from Washington, D.C. The stuff was randomly scattered about. The driver was a girl, and about 20 years old. Now, if I stopped the story there, it would still be creepy enough. Of course, by this time, I'm on mega high alert, anticipating my next step to bring me upon a tragic scene. Be that a rape victim, or a murder scene, or the perpetrators in commission of such.

Well, it was decided that my friends would stop and camp, while I headed for Charit Creek (2-3 miles) to try to find help. I walked those 2-3 miles in the darkness, almost fearful to use my flashlight. I jogged most of the way. I had gathered up the items as I walked along.

I reached Charit Creek to find a group of hikers cooking dinner. They seemed rather frightened to see me jogging out of the woods, sweaty and wide-eyed! They all jumped up to greet me to see what the panic was all about.

As I told the first ten seconds of my report, I hear a voice from the porch yell "Oh my gosh!!!"

I was never more relieved to see this 20 year-old girl named 'Julie', from Washington, D.C. bounding off the porch and into my arms. She cried and cried. Matter of fact...this is always a good thing...:D

Anyway...turns out she was trailing the group, and had slipped and fallen by the creek. She didn't realize that she had torn the side pocket of her back-back, and was unknowingly scattering her valuables along the trail.

I was thanked profusely, and had to turn down cash rewards over and over. I told her that I was just glad that she was ok. They gave me a snack for my trip back, and I headed for camp in the dark, very much relieved.

Soon after daylight the next morning, I was stoking the fire when I heard commotion coming down the trail. Well, here comes Julie from D.C. and a couple of her friends with a basketful of fresh cooked omelettes, buscuits and bacon, and fresh coffee. At that point I was glad to see her!

Happy ending to what I thought would be a tragic finding in the woods that night.

Found an old dilapidated moonshine still under a rock shelter, deep in the recesses of Big South Fork a few years ago while hog hunting.

They had the smoke defused under the rock shelter, for the roof was blackened, I suppose so the Revenuer's wouldn't spot the smoke coming from the mash cooking.

Old set of bed springs, rusted barrel, and glass jug's etc. all right next to a clear, pure stream of water, running out of the ground.

Neat find...FWIW

Where you found all those bones, could have been something that maybe was poisoning them.

I found a stolen truck up in the mountains in Grundy County. It had been stolen and driven down a powerline clearing and ditched deep in the woods after it ran out of gas. I can't imagine the idiots that drove it in there and then had to walk out.

Found a natural stone bridge and some nice bluff shelters in the mountains.

I found a bum camped out in the woods in Florida. If I was a bum I would camp in the woods in Florida in the winter and the Mountains in the summer. He was a nice bum. :)

Up in Shawnee National Forest I found a nice wood-gripped folding razorknife partially buried in a creek bed, covered in mud with water running over it. It was rusty, but just from the razorblade in it. I snatched it up, dried it off, changed out the blade and it's still in my truck today. Also stumbled across a folding chair and a discarded shoe in the middle of a clearing in the woods in Murfreesboro.
