S&W 44 mag, wheel gun guys ??

Here's the story. My dad, who passed away about 7 years ago, had a S&W 44 mag. It was nickel (that what I always thought it was) or chrome, with a 6" or 6.5" barrel. I think it had a wood grip. It is possibly a 29 (nickel) , maybe a 629 (stainless) (I'm thinking from what I have been able to research)

The age of it I am not sure, but my dad used it, with a scope and shoulder holster, to deer hunt with, back when I was a kid, this would have been in the 80's. What model would have come out in the 80's or if older, would match the description I gave, I am leaning heavy toward the nickel by the way.

Any ideas. The gun is not in mine or my family's possession but hopefully soon will be. One of those complicated, drawn out family situations that are all FUBAR'd.

Well, its probably an M29 if its a smith...the dirty harry hand cannon. It's been around since the 50's. At one time, tuned m29's dominated metallic silhouette competition, but the newer single shot handguns now do i think. The round was invented by Elmer Keith souping up the .44 special, although there is some argument about that. They make fine handguns for hunting or whatever you want to do with it. There should be alot of info available if you surf around a little.

Is this it?

That is very possibly it. I haven't seen it in years, but my brother is working on getting it back. I hope there is no problem in getting it back.

So, is there a question in this - apart from a possible model?

Probably a 29.

The question is whether it is a 4-screw (1957-61) or 3-screw.

Value of a 98%, with case, 4-screw is $661. 3-screw is $411. Subtract $40 without case.

Please explain "4-screw vs 3-screw" to the wheel gun newb.

Oh hell, you wheel gun newb's don know nothin"! :D

"4 screw, can be discerned by 2 exposed screws on lower right sideplate (one is concealed by the right grip, and one in front of the trigger guard). Mfg. began 1957 after approx. ser. no. S175,000 and was disc. 1961."

Personnally, I really like the 44 mag format handguns.
