Yeah, I heard this today. Not surprising, but at the same time it concerns me. The hardware market ain't what it used to be. I remember when PC's actually had profit margins. Now its sell the unit at a loss and recoup on the service plans and such. Its a difficult model in an increasingly competitive market.

CompUSA is the only place I can get Mac stuff locally.

CompUSA always reminded me of IBM...

Twice the price and half the capabilities.

I take it you've never owned a Thinkpad...

I heard about the CompUSA thing a few days ago... doesn't really affect those geeks here in the greater Chattavegas area, but I've read that they've had half the sales of the same time last year (but that's probably due, in part, to the fact that they've already closed quite a few of their stores).

I wonder if this will be similar in sadness to where they shut down all the Media Plays. Buying overpriced music hasn't been the same since. Sure, you could order online, but being able to walk in and find that fairly rare album or an esoteric high-fidelity remastering on gold discs (MFSL) or XRCD's and HDCD's... you just can't find that now... not as easily.

My condolences to the geeks it affects.

To quench your geek, may I recommend:

It's not computer related, but I picked one up a few days ago, and it made me happy.

aside from this place I could care less if all computers stopped working. Life was better in the old days before there were CompUSAs

We occasionally use the local CompUSA for things that we need in a pinch. Mostly I order from CDW.

I always hating going to CompUSA, especially if I was wearing any clothing with an IT related logo on it (polo shirt, etc.) because the resident geeks would always try to show you how much they knew about a given subject. It got tiring. ;)

They're good for the last minute stuff. I have calls to frix one thing, and end up having 1/2 a days work come out of it. I've ended up running out there several times to finish a job in 1 day insted of making a return trip.

Not to mention, they have those carts full of laptops and monitors they put on a good clearance every now and then. Like the tablet I'm on now. 1100.00 minus 200.00 worh of rebates, plus my resellers discount, ended up under 900.00

That's because they were all trying to get you to hire them into a real job.

I remember the good old days when it was cheaper and better to build your own PC than it was to purchase a Dell or other big name brand. Now you can get similar parts at a great discount buying the whole thing pre-fab.

Depends on what you are building. If you are trying to match their low end hardware, don't bother. If you want a power house machine you can still build it cheaper.

These days you are getting ripped off if you buy a Dell, regardless of the price. There is something to be said for buying quality at a higher price. (Kinda the same as popular pistols -)

Dell's suck big time, IME. Cheap components and retarded OS. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got into my wife's Dell for the last couple of days. No wonder she hates me for insisting she upgrade her 484. God, Dell is the Glock of the industry....

Wal-Mart is getting into the computer business.

I see where they're selling Dells, now.

Wonder how long it'll be before we go to the big box to get all our computers and computer components?

I wouldn't go with Vista if you paid me. For the next PC I am thinking about getting a MAC and just putting Windows on it.

Who knows when that will be.

Vista isn't bad but you've got to have the machine to support it. I run it on my Thinkpad with CoreDuo/2GB, my Dell GX620 with CoreDuo/2GB and my homebuilt home computer with an AMD64 and 2GB. They all run just fine.

I wouldn't buy a Mac and then ruin it by installing Windows even though you can. Leopard is a nice OS and I'd run it in a heartbeat.

What's the best to buy?.....a computer, right off the shelf, I mean.....

One that will do what you want it to do. Seriously, Computers are like guns, too many out there, you just got to find one that fights your need. I personally buy HP laptops (Compaqs under the HP logo) and buy eMachines Desktops (I can upgrade the hardware).. I've never paid more than 500 for a desktop and I usually uninstall all the unwanted crap that they come with..

dell = Glock? :puke:You are kidding right? My glock goes bang every time I pull the trigger, the dell will probably die before my glock does..

The last time I walked into CompUSA was about 2 months ago. I noted they had pretty much stopped selling computers and were pushing TVs and peripherals instead. I made a mental note to short the stock but they appeared not to be publicly traded. So this doesnt come as much of a surprise.

Let's see.... you like H&K's, and Macs.

I knew there was a reason I liked you.

I went to the 100 Oaks CompUSA store today and was informed that...

  • There are no more returns on anything purchased there
  • There are no more corporate net sales
  • There is no longer a corporate discount
  • Employees themselves no longer receive commission or discounts

Basically, CompUSA now sucks even worse than they did before.
