Making some 1911 grips

In the beginning phase of making a pair of grips for my newly acquired Springfield 1911. I was given a piece of burnt oak, 3/4" x 36", and it has been reversed cut. By that I mean instead of cutting the log in a plain slice method which is cutting so the grain is exposed in a "laid out pattern", it has been "cross cut" so the grain is at a 90 degree angle. I know thats confusing, but its a unique piece of wood. Anyway, I drew the grips out on the board last night and drilled holes for the grip screws and the saw dust looked like coffee grinds. I applied a little dark stain on one end of the board and the effect is beautiful. I will post pixs as I get further along, this will be my first attempt at this sort of thing so if I chuck it after a while, I will chalk one up for experience!!!

Cool! I'd like to see them when you finish them.

I've made a few sets of grips for my 1911's, with mixed results.. The hardest part is getting the screw holes lined up correctly - I found it easier to do that part first, then cut/sand the shape of the grip down around them.

I have a nice piece of dark walnut that I picked up at the Nashville gun show this weekend tempting me to get back into the garage and make some more.

I'm looking forward to seeing these as well as shooting your new toy.

Are you saying that the grain is perpedicular to the long axis? If so, the grips will be very fragile. You will have to use much care while working them down. If it all comes out, they should look great. I will be interested to see pics.

If you find that the grips are fragile once you work them, you may want to try a few coats of super glue to strengthen the wood. (I learned to do it making wooden pens - works great.)

Quarter sliced....I didn't properly name it. But yes, as you described. I don't think there will be a problem with strength. We will see...

I think the correct term is quartersawn.
