.38 spl brass

was depriming some CBC brass last night (I hope I've called it correctly), and I noticed that several shells would not fit correctly in the shell holder. Seems you had to really work it to get it right and then guide the shell into the press. Anybody had this issue? It was not with any other headstamp and not every CBC round.

Yesterday I received a new Lee carbide die set from Midway and fired up the old Rockchucker press I made my parents buy me when I was a smart-ass little 12 year old gun freak.

Using the shell holder that came with the Lee kit I resized about 500 rounds of 38 brass last night (got a little excited, haven't done it in years) and ended up with about 20-25 Winchester shells that would not go in the holder at all. Had several more that took some persuasion.

Pulled out the old RCBS shell holder (from back in the day, have an old set of dies) and they fit right in.

What's up with that?

BTW, care to share any 38 recipes? I'm getting back into the reloading business.

Our department shoots probably 300,000-350,000 rounds per year out of our revolvers and we notice from time to time that the brass rim of a few rounds are not machined correctly. They are either too thick, twice the norm in several cases, or the rim was wedged in a shell holder and the rim distorted. It has been Remington or Winchester if I remember correctly. We have also found several .357 Mag. rounds in .38 Special boxes as well as .38 Short. I've only found one 158 gr. RNL seated upside down however. We tell our trainees to examine all rounds and expect anything.

I'm getting ready to go out to the barn and do some piddling around, I'll look up some formula's. I can remember typically on .38 spl a good round will travel +/- 850 fps. Those seem to be more accurate. Are you reloading lead or fmj?

158 gr swc's is what i use for throwing downrange (except when Tnvolfan makes me some holler points). 125 gr rn for 9mm, getting ready to order some for .45 - BTW, just scored a Springfield 1911-A1 Champion couple of weeks ago. Bartered some labor for it!!!

If you're looking for wadcutter info, 148 gr. HBWC Zero bullet, 2.8 gr. Bullseye, Federal brass, Federal primer. This combination has won a number of trophies through my 2.5", 4" and 6" S&W 686 models.

How did you know what my 6" 586 DAO and my S&W 52 lived on ??

158's usually were filled with just enough Unique to get them around 850-900 fps. I forget the grains but should be in any reloading manual

.003" taper crimp and some Safariland Comp III L- Frame speedloaders and we are off to the races... may have to go with this if they will let me for the HCP course..

P.S. sometimes the brass develops small dings especially if you drop them, or eject them, onto concrete,.. sometimes a quick pass with a file will fix the dings and help them fit the shell holder I solved this by loading them all on a Dillon 550 its shell holder is very forgiving when set up properly and the groups still stay as tight as rounds loaded on either my RCBS or Lyman Spartan...

I also use the Safariland Comp III speedloaders and found them to be excellent. I use a Ted Blocker open front holster, belt and speedloader platform with the 6" 686 and Safariland lined holster for the 4" and 2 1/2" guns with HKS speedloaders.
