Gimmick Gun?

I'm going to have to agree with TwoLane, while any gun can kill someone, the 5.7 has never been shown to be a superior round aside from armor penetration with the AP rounds. The FiveSeven is overpriced as well as the ammo, which is just a weaker version of the .221 Fireball. I might get one someday, but it's very far down on my list and it is by no means magical like so many people think.

On another note, maybe it is just me but trying to use the deaths of those at Ft. Wood as an augmentative point to support the prowess of the Five-Seven and it's ammunition...... Real classy :)

Something does not sit right with me turning the carnage of a spree murderer into a ballistics case study to support one of your favorite cartridges, in fact this seems particularly reprehensible.

I don't feel that I was doing that at all. And I can assure you that the 5.7 is not one of my favorite cartridges. I don't own anything that chambers it and probably won't for a long time.

The tragedy at Fort Hood proves that the round can kill. I don't feel that saying that is classless or reprehensible. Every event in our lives and throughout history teaches us something. If we aren't allowed to talk about it, then we don't learn anything.

I'm really sorry if I offended you or anyone else by talking about the shooting as that was never my intention.

Here is a little about the law and what is regulated as AP ammunition

rec.guns FAQ: II.G.1. Federal Law and AP Ammunition

Sometimes a cartridge will be on the market and later is ruled to be AP based on 921. The SS190 is an example, a more well known example was much of the Chinese 7.62X39 (some Chinese ammo was fine but executive orders killed off the rest) Some AP ammo is explicitly excluded, 30-06 AP is the most well known example.

I shoot 40 grain fn ammo in all of mine.Something could be found wrong with any rnd. What is a perfect rnd? I own over 100 guns and the 5.7 is one of my favorites.

Any cartridge can kill. If that was the only relevant factor, then the .22lr would be the world's best combat cartridge as it has excellent penetration and a proven kill record on people.

Let's remember that the purpose of a handgun is to let you fight to your long gun. My preference is for a cartridge that will penetrate to vital areas while making a large enough hole to let out blood rapidly. The second part of that equation is where the small caliber bullets fail. While they may be great killers, they do not necessarily incapacitate quickly. I may be old school, but I do like to rely upon expansion, tumbling, or other unpredictable factors. If it happens, great! But I like my cartridge to be able to penetrate to vitals and let blood out quickly even if it does NOT happen!

So, my choices will still be the 9mm-.45 diameter bullets travelling at over 1000fps.

I'm more interested in the Keltec P30 that is coming out... .22magnum, 30rd magazine. I can practice with cheaper ammo, with the same ballistics, and carry 50% more ammo.

5.7x28mm is 'effective' in terms of that it will incapacitate someone under the right conditions... the problem is that the ammunition which is readily available to the public will not penetrate very deeply at all, so one must rely on the accuracy and controllability to put several rounds in a sensetive spot to do the job. SS190 is good stuff though, if you could be sure that you could get it. This stuff is also supposed to be pretty good: http://www.eliteammunition.com/

I'd be interested in a P90 (or settle for an sbr'd PS90), since it is a very convenient platform for a SHTF scenario, and one could carry alot of ammo and still have room in the pack for other survival items.

Really, when it comes down to it... the 5.7x28mm is a severely neutered 5.56, which already has questionable performance in some circles. I wouldn't make it my first choice, is all I'm saying.

One the one hand, from at least an SD standpoint, I at least partially suscribe to the idea that almost no one likes to leak. In other words, I think that the instances where an attacker would keep coming, at risk of further injury or death, after getting shot with anything - even a .22lr - are not going to be very common. That is why I sometimes feel comfortable carrying a NAA mini chambered for .22WMR as a BUG (well, more like as a 'get off me' gun.) I also view the smaller calibers as certainly 'better than nothing' for folks who can't handle a larger caliber due to limitations of strength, etc.

On the other hand, I carry something in a larger caliber as primary. Sure, plenty of people are probably saved from attack simply by having a .22lr with them. Sure, the FN pistol apparently did a lot of damage in the aforementioned tragedy. Then, again, Samson supposedly killed a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of an ass but I'm not going to start carrying around a donkey's mandible for self defense.

Im still waiting to hear what the gimmick is.

What ever it is has worked,I have 3 5.7 hand guns and a PS90.After takeing the 5.7 to my place in Texas 9 of my friends bought one. After letting my neighbor shoot mine he bought one and a PS90,then his dad and grand dad bought one.

2 of my buds in NC bought them after shooting mine.I need to come up with a gimmick like this, with little recoil and high capacity mags none of them buy a couple boxes of ammo they buy by the case.

All i know is i am super happy with my FiveSeven , and one day will get a PS90 SBR. Want a P90 but i doubt can get one, been wanting one since 1999. oh and on a joking note. If the 5.7x28 is good enough for Star Gate Command to kill bad aliens it is goot enough for me
