Rechargable Battery Questions... (Bike Headlamps)

I have a couple of fairly nice, 15 year old, Vistalite bicycle lamps that I want to put back into service, but don't know enough abut rechargeable batteries to feel comfortable doing it, with out first asking a couple of questions... I'd hate to blow them up, or otherwise ruin them.

Inside, the lamps really don't look much more than a glorified flashlight using a 2.5VO83A screw in flashlight bulb, 4 AA sized rechargeable batteries, and an AC adapter rated: Input - 120VAC 60Hz 3W, Output - 3VDC 300mA (Class 2 Transformer)

The battery compartment is marked with three battery types: AA, LR6, and UM3. - The original batteries were generic and unmarked except for the name Vistalite.

Is it safe to say the original batteries were the UM3's, and that the the transformer is the "recharger?" - OR do I need to find a separate recharger? (Or, buy new bike lamps?) I thought there was more to a recharger than a small transformer.

Thanks for your help!

I'd assume that the transformer is the recharger. The batteries are likely done being 15 years old. You can get a whole new set-up that will weigh less and output much more light for under $50.
