Time limit on carry class certificate?

Does anyone know if there is a time limit on the certificate and when you can apply for your permit? I would like to wait about a month after I take the class before I apply for the permit, and I dont want any surprises.

It is 6 Months... I'm taking my HCP Class, supposed to be today but the clock changing screwed me, but the guy did call and I asked him and he said that it lasted 6 months from the date of completion of the class until it expires.

Thanks I was wandering the same thing. Was planning on taking class and then going to wait (for more money to come in) to file for permit.

BTW you can't go to the sheriff's office for fingerprints anymore.

The State has a contract and you have to go through www.tennessee.cogenid.com now.

You register and find a place that does it. Not too many places.

When you go to the driver license place to file for your permit they will tell you where you need to go get your finger printing done. BTW they only except plastic or cash for your fee, no checks. You also need a "certified" form of ID like a certified birth certificate with the embossed state seal, passport, DD214 to prove you are a US citizen. Oh! Don't fold your paper work you get from your gun class. They will pitch a fit.

It is 6 months but when I took mine the instructor said that if you hadn't applied within the time period he could issue a new certificate from the one he kept on file.

I had to provide a copy of my birth certificate and just used a photocopy.

I had gotten my DL about 3 years earlier and they had my birth certificate on file already. They want it again.

Whenever I went yesterday, they wanted the EMBOSSED copy of my Birth Certificate. I had it, but, I heard another lady giving a guy down the road for bringing in a copy of his BC.

I used my passport. I find my passport to be the most useful identification document I own as it establishes identity & citizenship. Very versatile, plus it doesn't contain any info that can be used readily for ID theft.

Yeah, I used expired one when I got mine.

But now must be current one, AFAIK, which I don't have.

I've never seen it in the TCA. There are many references in 39-17-1351 to "6 months", but only referring to new residents, expirations, etc. I remember when my wife took the class and was told that she had 6 months to apply. I looked it up then and couldn't find any relevant statute. One of these days, I'll call Nashville and ask.

Seems to me that if you can take the class, get your permit, then never have to do any further training or testing, you should be able to apply whenever you want as long as you took the class at some point in your life.

I think the catch here is that the training certificate is only valid for six months. At least that's what mine says.

Now, why the certificate is only valid for six months is another question. I don't know if that's the law but that would be the place to look.

I guess it's in the requirements for the carry class.

Which aren't really "statutes", but "rules".
