So as some of you may know, I am moving to Memphis in July because my new Wife (getting married in June) will be attending UT's Pharmacy School. I....We are super excited about the move but, there are some issues popping up. So, I am calling on my new group of friends here on TGO and asking for your help.

1) I need a job! I will be the only one working her first year of school and I am getting very nervous about finding a good job. I have an Associates of Science from Pellissippi and a Bachelors of Science from UT in Sociology. I have almost 4 years of banking experience but I am open to anything.

2) I...we need a place to live! She will be going to school in Midtown at UT's campus, so somewhere close would be nice. We are looking to rent and spend less than $650 a month if possible on rent.

So, if any of you guys or gals have4 any connections in Memphis I would really appreciate your help. Plus, maybe I could meet a few shooting buddies in the process!

Wish I could help with the job. I have been out of work for over a year since my wife transfered to Memphis.

I am having lunch tomorrow with some friends that live in Midtown. I will ask them if they know of anything in the area.

Just my opinion, but I would look for a place to rent in East Memphis. Midtown has small houses, some of the neighborhoods aren't that great (its Memphis) and its full of hippies :P . Don't get me wrong its not a bad area, you'll just either feel very comfortable there or you wont (its an artsy part of town). As for jobs, that's a tough one. With a Sociology degree you could try Youth Villages, the VA, maybe St Jude or try doing a contract position somewhere until you find something better.

If you have banking experience then First TN is HQ'd in Memphis. Just something to consider. Not saying there are any opportunities but something to look out for.

As far as a place to stays at ...I recommend Midtown, but I'm biased, I grew up in the middle of Central Gardens. :D So the only advice there is that there are no apartment complexes or buildings (with a couple of exceptions) you'll want to consider in that part of town. There are houses for rent and a bunch of upstairs garage apartments. No idea what the prices are like.

BTW, UT Memphis is Downtown, not Midtown. The dividing lines there are very clear...for example, you could live in a house on the North side of the tracks (in this scenario those 1 block south of Central Av.) and have gangs and cracks houses 100 yards away on the other side of the tracks but you would never have any problems. :P It's a weird place.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I have only been to Memphis a few times. I hope I can meet up with some of you when we get there. Keep the ideas coming!

I would second the VA, along with all the other numerous big hospitals in Memphis.

Even if at first they dont have something that works with your degree it seems at least the VA Hosp is always looking for Maint., Mail room, grounds keeping etc.

But really with your degree you should be able to find a hospital to use it at.....Memphis has several pretty good sized hospitals.

I would apply at the City Of and the County also. You are just looking for a job and not a lifelong adventure right?

As for living....Since I dont live there, but have almost moved several times.....it seemed all the areas (outside the city) I liked like Arlington or Germantown I could not afford. So I can not help with that part.

I am certain you will get plenty help before and after you move from the folks on this board.

Good Luck....

In Memphis AND the surrounding communities, it's a block by block thing as far as the neighborhoods go. As far as the $650 for rent, that's a crap shoot again, depending upon the block.
