Although the Mosin is a good, solid rifle, you'll not likely get the intrinsic accuracy out of it that you would from a .308, especially the Savage. But, it's probably a whole lot cheaper to get a Monte Carlo stock for the Mosin, along with a decent scope, than to buy the Savage. The Mosin does, after all, make a fine hunting rifle. Like one feller told me just today, decide what it is that YOU want and get it done. Pretty sound advice if ya ask me.

From what I hear, the M38s are not as plentiful as the M44s or the m91/30s. If for that reason, alone, I'd want to leave the 38 in original trim. That's just me, though.

Leave the M38 original and pick up the .308.

IMO, I wouldn't recommend drilling,tapping, bolt-cutting on a M38 - too scarce.

I'm doing this to a rather nondescript M91/30, 1943, that happens to be a good shooter. Even then, I have another M91/30 for the collection.

As the others stated, leave the M38 in its original form. Get the Savage, 308win is a great round for both hunting and target shooting.
