Good Blue Job?

I have a friend with an old Model 15 revolver. It's in great shape mechanically, but needs to be refinished. I have considered trading for the gun, but won't touch it without a good finish.

The Model 15 is one that I sold a long time ago, and always regretted it. What are my best options?

Buy a model 15 in good shape and leave this one alone. Refinishing is money wasted.

I suspected this could be the case. They don't seem to be real scarce.

+1 on a buying a decent one! Very rarely will you recapture your expense. Like you, a lot of people will also not purchase a refinished firearm!

Here are some before and after pics of a model 19 I had refinished locally. Mechanically the gun was in great shape, the finish was trashed from carry and lack of care. I didn’t have any problem selling it.

I did all the prep work, stripped it, glass beaded it, buffed everything, etc.

I told the guy that blued it I wanted the blue like S&W use to put on guns that was high gloss, almost black. I think he did an excellent job.

That's slick, Dave...who done the job? My hat's off to him.

Look's like an original S&W finish!

That does look nice. My point, however, is that I'd have paid just as much for it before you spent the money to refinish it as after. Also, you may be the exception, but most of the time you could have bought a nice one to begin with for the price you paid for the revolver and the refinish.

For those who want the handgun for a shooter, but take pride in their firearms, I think you could recapture the cost of the blueing if it wasn't prohibitive. Without pride in ownership [or for a collector] the reblueing would be a bad idea. For resale to a Smith & Wesson fan...you've gotta love the result! Absolutely, beautiful.
