870 pump 12ga locked up

We went out sunday to shoot clays, after about 25 rounds my 870s slide locked up. Never had a single problem with this gun until now. The gun is about five years old, with about 1000 rounds threw it. It has one spent round in chamber and 2 more in magazine. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

What do you mean by locked up?

Remove the magazine tube cap slowly to remove the live shells. Then pull the barrel off to remove the spent shell, you may need a dowel or cleaning rod to pop it out. Examine the spent shell to see if maybe it expanded somehow lodging it in the barrel. Could just be that it expanded and couldn't be extracted.

Keep us posted.

What he said and push out the 2 pins holding the trigger plate.

If their is a shell caught between the lifter and bolt it will be free. This can be caused by "short stoking" the slide.

Does the 870 have the flex tab lifter? It is designed to allow you to clear without disassembly.

Put it back together, shoot another 1000 rounds.

What I mean by locked up is that the forearm will not pump. The action has to be back for the barrell to be removed. I have removed the magazine cap, but the barrell will not release, Ive pulled, pushed and pryed cannot get the barrell off or slide to move at all.

Shell is stuck, for whatever reason. Extractor still has a grip on it, so barrel won't come off.

It's an 870.

Grab by pump forearm and smack butt down against ground or carpet.

Worse thing it could do is break extractor, but it almost certainly won't, it's an 870.

That was going to be my next suggestion. I had to do that with my 870 Wingmaster once.

Yep. Spent hull in the chamber, grab forend and smack butt on the deck with all your might, it will open.

I had that problem somewhat regularly when dirty until I started using militec oil on the chamber area. After a few uses I had no further trouble. Keeping the chamber area clean will help too.

Edit: Also, for whatever reason, I only had this problem with cheap target loads, maybe the hulls expand a bit more during firing or something.

...while making sure the safety is on, barrel pointed away from your face and the slide release is pushed in toward the receiver. It's a good clearing procedure when you need to get back into the fight.

Slide already free, since not cocked.

Just wanted to make sure he doesn't crack the stock (if wood) in case the trigger group malfunctioned and the release has not disengaged.

I reckon anything's possible.

So ADAM, what's the story?

Thanks for the help from all of you who posted advice. Banging it on the ground freed t up:screwy:. It was the cheap ammo the plastic of the shell had run down over the shell and wouldnt allow it to eject.

THANKS TO ALL:cheers:

No problem. Glad you got it working. Like I said, I had the same thing happen when I tried to make my own snap caps. LOL

You don't have to remove the cap to empty the mag. Stick your finger up and fee the back of the shell in the mag and slide your finger over to the left. There is a spring loaded catch there that retains the shell until the bolt is cycled. Just press down on the latch and it will release the shell, one at a time. Be sure to hold the ramp up and watch your fingers, I have pinched mine a few times.
