Sig p238 problem child

So I've had my p238 a few weeks now. Took me a while to find ammo for it. Last week I found 100 rds of Aguila 95 grain FMJ.

Took it to the range and had several FTF's and a few FTE's. I thought it might be the ammo. However, when I broke the gun down to clean I noticed a nice chunk of metal is missing from the base of the feed ramp. I have no idea if it was like that when I bought it or if it happened while shooting. (if that's possible?)

Friday my ammo from Cabela's finally came and I went to the range today.

I shot 100 rounds of PMC 90 FMJ and again had several FTF's. Then I remembered something I had read online a few weeks ago. In another forum I saw where someone mentioned that the original magazines for the gun had problems and that the new ones were slightly different. Sure enough I compared the mag that came with the gun, with the mag that I purchased from the gun show last week and they are different.

I started paying closer attention today while shooting and realized that the only time the gun wouldn't feed was with the old mag(the one that came with the gun) I don't think i had a single problem with the new mag.

Do you guys think the issue with the feed ramp is one i need to worry about assuming the problem is really with the faulty mag?

And do you think Sig will send me a new magazine if i tell them about the problem? Anyone have experience with their customer service?

Chunk out of the feed ramp? See you dealer and send it back to sig.

I bought it from another TGO'er so I doubt I could take it back to the dealer.

If anyone has a p238 and would be willing, I would mail you the old magazine. If someone would test it, then I would know if it's the feed ramp or the magazine. Just throwing out ideas here.

Can you post a picture of the feed ramp?

Ya, not sure how well it will show up. I don't have a great camera and it so small I don't know if you can see it. give me a few minutes.

Still, I'd check with Sig Customer Service Center. Shouldn't have ramp issues on something this new and they can take care of the mag problem at the same time. I'm not the most experienced guy here, but those are two issues I wouldn't want in a carry gun.

And check with your seller, maybe he can furnish information or posssibly sales reciept for the pistol. But I still think Sig would stand behind a broken feed ramp. I know the mag problems are getting resolved for people.

I actually found the receipt tucked inside the owners manual but the dealer is 2 hours away. I might call sig first

here is the best picture I could take. If you look on the bottom right part of the feed ramp you can't necessarily see the missing part but you can tell the shape is different.

Well, the fact that Sig redesigned their mags to improve the feeding makes me think that the ramp issue isn't unique to you. That's my guess.

Well I was thinking the chip missing from the feed ramp has to be a machining error. I'm not expert but I wouldn't think it could be cause by shooting the gun.

I've had to send mine back to Sig twice with feed/eject issues......seems to be doing better now. They have about a 2-3 week turn time. Better to wait on hold to talk to someone, never had much success with their callback deal.

You sent back a p238?

Did you check with the previous owner regarding these issues? One would imagine such an obvious defect would be noticable, unless they just happened to be using a certain kind of ammo that wasn't being affected by a chunk missing from the feed ramp.

I've never had to deal with SIG customer service, but I've always heard positive feedback from those who have.

I'd check with the original owner and see if he registered it with SIG. If he did see if he can help. If not register it in your name.

He never shot the gun. He bought it new and never shot it. He's a nice guy so I'm sure he will make it right if it comes to that but I was trying to deal with it on my own first.

Yes Sig will swap out your mag. Just call them and tell them you have the old style "Ski Ramp"

Also Tell them about the ramp on YOUR gun do not say anything about your the 2nd owner.

I have seen 2 others like this and they fixed both.

Just be nice on the phone and give no more info than they ask for other than your problems

Yes, when I bought my p238 new it wouldnt feet worth a crap....tried all different kinds of ammo and it didnt like any of it, first time at sig, they polished the feed ramp, no good, second time they changed a recoil spring or something. Before this last fix, I couldnt get through a mag without an issue, since getting it back Ive shot maybe 100 rounds without any issues. I love how the gun shoots.....when it shoots.

Eric:_____________

Take the 238 over to Predator Custom Shop on Papermill, Drive.

Website here: Predator Custom Shop

They are good guys and know about pistols as well as AR's. They are open 10:00 am thru 6:00 pm tuesday thru saturday (..i think...). That little ding on the feed ramp looks to me like it can be fixed pretty easily.

They can tell you quickly. My guess is that the cost (..if there is one..) of the fix is minimal.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Leroy

No that Leroy is giving bad advice, but I would send it back to sig first. If they see you have had "work" done of any kind they may not fix it for you. Thats assuming Predator Customs fixes the feed ramp and you still have FTF or FTE

my feedramp looks like that too but on both corners identical to each other, might be smaller than your in the pic though...might try to post a pic later

*just cleaned my pf9 and its like that too

couldn't really get a good pic of it but you can tell by the way the light hits the different angles there. haven't shot mine yet, can't find ammo anyway...hope it works.

See, yours is different than mine though. Yes it appears to be rounded off, but mine is only on one side and it is definitely not supposed to be that way.

You should post a picture of your magazine and I could tell you if you have the old "ski ramp" style someone mentioned above. Apparently those were only on the first models. If your gun is newer than mine you should have the updated magazine.
