1811-1812 we had multiple (4) ranging from 7.2 to 8.1, the largest recorded in the contiguous US....oh, that was right here and covers part of West Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas, and Southern MO.

And that formed Reelfoot lake.

How big??? Gigantinormous!

And, it made the Mississippi river run backwards for several days!

Believe it, or not.

My family has had a house on the lake up there, (wash out) for the last 16 years. My mom and dad bought the place and after my dad died, my mom stayed there. I go up several times a year which is not enough.

It may please many around here, especially those who have never been there, that if such a magnitude quake hits the New Madrid fault again, Memphis may well slide off into the river...at least the downtown part.

If New Madrid goes again - and it is probably overdue - you can write off a lot of Memphis and St. Louis. Nasty effects all down the Miss river valley. I think (hope) that I'm far enough away to be subject to no more than a really bad shake-around.

Would make Haitian earthquake look like a minor disaster and Katrina no more than an annoyance ..............

Would that be a bad thing?> I've been to St. Louis and Memphis, and I can't say I'd miss them.

I participated in a multi-agency drill for such an occurrence while in the Nat'l Grd. (2006 I believe)

Strange (to me anyway) that they were figuring on using Jackson as a base for all Emergency operations.......Now I am no genius but St Louis is a whole lot father away from Memphis so I dont know what gives them such faith that much of Jackson would still be standing.

And the FEMA/TEMA offices here leak every time it rains, the whole exercise was a joke. One can not out run a tornado but I think I would try to out run such an earthquake.

I have not much faith in Jackson to be still standing nor to support anything other than a crime wave.

And Yes Reelfoot lake is a beautiful place.:P I wish I could go more often.
