Bowhunting and HCP Holders

Recommended Posts

NASHVILLE - Handgun permit holders in Tennessee would be able to carry their weapons while bowhunting deer under legislation headed to the governor for his consideration.

The measure passed the Senate 30-1 today after being approved in the House 85-3 earlier in the week.

The proposal would allow a person to carry the weapon "during the archery-only deer season."

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Mike Turner of Nashville says he proposed the legislation after a constituent was robbed in a parking lot after deer hunting. Hunters are prohibited from using the gun on the deer.

However, Democratic Sen. Beverly Marrero of Memphis says she doesn't understand why guns are needed when hunters "already have a bow and arrow."

Gov. Phil Bredesen is expected to review the measure once it reaches his desk

She has never bailed out of the boat before daylight only to run into a pack of wild hogs. Imagine trying to climb a tree after having 4-5 hogs of unknown size grunting at you just outside of your headlight range and all you have is a bow. I considered knocking an arrow but figured I was better off using it as a club and running if it would have came to that. SOme people just do not get it. You never know what you will run into in the woods by yourself. Wild hogs, panther, bears, zombies, or crazies

She's never been stalked by a pack of coyotes while walking to her tree stand by moonlight at 4am while carrying only a bow.

That happened to a friend a couple years ago. He said he could hear them growling and walking through the leaves... said he's never been so scared. He made it up his stand, waited until daylight, climbed back down, drove straight to the gun store and bought a pistol. He's carried it while bow hunting ever since. The game wardens he's met have never said a word about it.

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency - FAQs

May persons possessing handgun carry permits possess their handguns while on WMAs, PHAs, or refuges open to hunter access?

Recent legislative changes provide that individuals who possess a carry permit may possess their handgun while on TWRA wildlife management areas, public hunting areas, or refuges open to hunter access. The handgun may not be used for taking game unless specifically permited by TWRA regulation. This change will now allow those with carry permits to possess their handgun at times when previously it would not have been permissible such as during archery hunting. TWRA will apply this same interpretation to those possessing carry permits while hunting on private lands.

BTW, I got this info from one of Fallguys post from a couple of months ago.

And remember if you carry your firearm do not use it to shoot a snake. It's illegal to kill snakes in Tn.

In Tennessee, ihttp://www.tennsnakes.org/t is illegal to harm, kill, remove from the wild, or possess native snakes taken from the wild without the proper permits.

Please help the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) to protect our native snakes. Do not remove snakes from the wild or release snakes that
