Arrests made in three Ashland City theft cases

The Ashland City Times • February 24, 2010

Ashland City Police arrested two Nashville residents last week on three counts of theft after they allegedly stole a variety of items from three Main Street businesses.

Melanie Gay McClain, 47, and Mitchell Jose McClain, 53, both of Robbie Court in Nashville, are in the Cheatham County Jail on a $15,000 bond each and are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

The thefts occurred on Feb. 17 between noon and 1:30 p.m.

Ashland City Police Chief Marc Coulon said the two stole 76 BC Powders, 75 Goody’s Powders and eight condom boxes from the Shell Station, 17 Red Bull energy drinks from the Kangaroo Express and 11 bottles of Pepto Bismol from H.G. Hill.

The two were later pulled over by Ashland City police officer Daniel Anderson on a routine traffic stop for a seatbelt violation.

“Traffic stops are important in police work,” said Coulon, adding they can solve other crimes.

Coulon credited the work of Anderson. “His work led to the arrest of two people and helped solve three theft cases,” he said.

I can't come up with any possible reason why grown adults would want to steal that particular collection of stuff... :dirty:

Probably trying to sell the Goody's as cocaine and using the condoms as packaging. Maybe the Red Bull was to simulate the effects of the fake crack so the buyers would believe them? :dirty: No clue as to what the Pepto was for.

Okay.... Maybe the Pepto was to recover from all the Red Bull.

Though what the stole seems silly and you wonder why someone would steal items like that it makes perfect sense to me.

Items like that can be sold to mom and pop convenience stores and haji marts who will then resell them with their merchandise obtained from regular vendors. This sort of activity is not just random thievery but an ongoing criminal enterprise. Professional shoplifting rings do this type of theft/sell/resale to the tune of billions of dollars in lost merchandise to legitimate retailers every year. The markups on some items are huge just to account for the theft, condoms are a great example, a $4 box of 3 condoms costs the retailer about $1.25 but 300% markup is there to cover the massive amount of loss incurred on that item. So next time you go into Walgreens for a box of rubbers and have to have the clerk unlock the case for you, these people are why.
