Almost Turkey Time!

Recommended Posts

No real message here except to say that it's almost Turkey time in Tennessee. I had an unlucky deer season, so I am looking forward to turkey hunting. I got a chance to get some bow time in with the nice weather this weekend. I going mostly recurve this season, and am off work from May 5-20th so I am planning on some good turkey days. This is also my first year applying for the WMA quota hunts, when to they usually release the results of the draw?

I'm looking forward to it that's for sure, I'm going to try using a shotgun for some of the season.

I've never hunted with a gun, thought I would try it something different.

Should be a fun season either way, bow or gun..

Oh Yeah, it is getting close. I have been seeing the largest flocks ever in my area. Seen a flock on a buddy's hunting land(Bronker) today that had at least 150 birds in it.

Wow!

That would be a good place to get a double with that many birds running around.

Went out to the property I coyote hunt earlier saw a bunch of turkey's but also seen 2 coyotes watching them. I never got a shot on one of coyotes but I am going to ask the lady if she would let me turkey hunt.

I packed my new Tactical Tat'r vest last weekend. I have been painting the scope I added to my turkey gun. Daughter and I are going to pattern the guns this weekend since we both got new sights this year. I put a fiber optic ghost ring on her gun and left the 4x scope that I used for slugs on my gun. I have painted it to match the woodland camo. Just a quick rattle can paint job, but it matches nicely. Just a couple more coats of clear and it will be ready. I picked up a few new calls last month and I have been playing with them the past couple of weeks. We still have to get her some new camo since she has out grown everything she owns. I wish I could find a ladies sized leafy camo suit that she could get a few years out of.

Daughter and I went out and scouted a spot for the youth hunt March 27th & 28th. We will probably roost the turkeys the night before the youth hunt, just to give us a little better chance and let us know for sure where they are sleeping. Hopefully she can get her first turkey this year.

I have seen probably 100 turkeys out in fields the last few days. Even saw a few Toms in full strut! This is my first year hunting them in TN. I have been living out west and have had trouble getting on Toms. Plenty of Jakes but no long beards. I'm excited to say the least. Back in CO and WY, TN is a legendary turkey hunting destination. Plus TN seems to gets a lot of video time in the hunt vids. We will see what happens!

Still trying to decide if I am going to use a bow or my 20 Gauge on opening day. If I can find good loads for the 20 I will probably use that but I am itching to use a bow too. I might bow hunt in the morning then switch to the shotgun in the afternoon. I will probably only get about 3-4 days this season to hunt so I need to make the most of it.

I've been out and seeing a few nice Toms around and plenty of Jakes, I'm starting with my bow and depending on how that goes I may have to switch to a shotgun.

I've never gun hunted anything so that should be interesting..

Do what I do take both! That way if they want come in range of the bow, then you still have a chance with the gun.

Scouting trip was a huge success. Watched a gobbler fly down from his roost and was able to track him and his girls throughout the morning. He was extremely vocal and let me know right where they were so I didn't have to risk getting too close and bumping them.

I can't get to his roost (don't have permission), but I'm pretty sure I know about where he'll be about an hour later... even got confirmation from a local farmer. Lord willing, we'll be eating wild turkey for Easter.

What's a good turkey call? Being completely new to turkey hunting this year, I find myself in a total loss after looking at the many, many calls that they have out these days. From what I've seen so far I think I've got a good general idea of where they will be in the mornings, but I'd like to at least have something to help bring them in range if needed.

I started hunting turkey last year with one of the waterproof Box calls that didn't need chalking, It worked great and I had a few birds in close,

This year I'm trying a HS Strut Ring Zone Starfire Crystal (Glass), I've been real impressed with how it sounds now that I've learned to use it.

I have 4 different strikers for it which can really change the sound and will keep it working even if it gets wet.

I really suggest spending as much time as possible getting good with any call, I've had them turn and run on me by basically not knowing what I was doing.

Took the trailer to Cheatham Game Preserve Friday evening and sat around the fire with 2 of my buddies. Woke up early the next morning to scout and see how the youth hunt was going on. No gobbles at first location but listened to one at my favorite location but he must have been calling long distance. There sure was a bunch of road traffic that morning.

All I know is it's going to be a long week waiting for Sat.

I've seen some good Toms in a area I'm hunting, I just hope I can get one in close enough for a shot with my bow.
