+1 on the Windex (with Ammonia) treatment. Lot's of hot soapy water does the trick too. I know it sounds strange, but just get some dish soap, mix it up with hot water and pour it down the barrel from the breech end (just don't get it all down under the stock). Lots of it.

Only water will dissolved the corrosive salts from the surplus ammo so you want to do all this first, before putting any oil or any kind of solvent down the barrel.

Using the old GI bore cleaner - Wipe with a very wet patch, let sit a few (5-10) minutes.

Run a bronze brush through the bore if you have one, then alternate wet and dry until they come out reasonably clean.

Mike .357 suggests using a few patches of CLP after the GI stuff, maybe the different chemistry gets a different type of fouling.

No ammonia or hot soap/water bath needed.

Paint thinner gets it out, too. Just make sure you're working in a dehumidifier.

my preferred method of cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo is as follows:

Requirements:

Pot of boiling water

Cleaning rod with swab

dish soap (the in the sink kind, not dishwasher type)

field strip the rifle. Clean bolt, paying particular attention to the bolt face, using a tooth brush with hot, soapy water. rinse with hot water. allow to dry

immerse muzzle in pot of hot water with dish soap. Using cleaning rod with swab pump hot, soapy water in and out of bore not neglecting the chamber from the receiver end.

Water should be boiling or near to boiling so that it immediately begins to evaporate from the metal surfaces.

Then clean rifle in the usual way, using high quality solvents and oils (I recommend Breakfree CLP)

If you are shooting a gas operated rifle such as a garand or PSL, completely disassemble the gas operating system and clean with hot soapy water.

Remember, with corrosive ammo, we are wanting to remove the mercuric salt residue. The ammo leaves a residue that attracts moisture, the mercuric salts. Buy removing these salts, we eliminate the moisture attraction and the resulting corrosion.

And for the WWII vintage USGI bore cleaner -- leave it on the shelf, it is not as effective as the method described above and it is marketable to collectors...

As an aside and testimonial, I have shot thousands of rounds of corrosive ammo through a number of guns using this method of cleaning. I learned this system of cleaning from a man that shot matches (including Perry), in the 30's and 40's, and I believe this method to be the most effective and least labor intensive I have come across to date.
