The mum on the reciever makes it more desireable than most, as it was customary for the Japanese to grind off or otherwise deface it, as they felt it was a disgrace to turn their mum crest over to an enemy. Most Arisaka rifles you encounter will have the mum ground off.

Very interesting, I have a TYPE 99 with the Mum on the reciever that I got

from my father. It is a WWII bring back from a Marine that he grew up with,

that served in the South Pacific. Like yours the forend has been removed, I

wonder if this was just a way of sporterizing it or if it had another purpose.

The rifle belonged to my grandfather, who fought at Guadalcanal.

Wow, now that's a piece of family history. Did he ever say anything about the forend being cut off?

No, I never thought to ask unfortunately.

I have a 99' as well. Trying to get ahold of some ammo for it.

I wouldn't mind having a box or so. Let me know if you find any. :)

You will more than likely have to order the ammo off the net, unless you happen to stumble on some at a gun show.

I had always heard the wives-tail that if you cut the forend off and removed the action from the stock, it fit in a sea bag better

John

That makes as much sense as anything I've heard, 2 rifles both

with the mums intact and known bring backs with the forends cut

off. May be something to that wives tale, thanks for the info.

I won't take many rounds of ammo to exceed the value of your rifle if the ammo is the same price as the 6.5 Jap.

I'm guessing from that comment that these rifles are not highly valuable. Priced about like a mosin would be? $100-150?

In original state with the mum they can be worth from $250 to $400 depending on the condition. With the forend cut off it would be hard to say.

No, right now, as setsdw said, they are more desireable than the Mosins. I'm not sure why. I'm also going to guess the Mosins will catch them in value in a few years. Stock up!

If you are saying that your Grandfather brought that rifle back from Guadalcanal; you truly have a family treasure.

I wouldn’t let a family heirloom like that get away for a few hundred bucks.

Hey I got one of these . Never noticed the grind marks before . I have shot it before , Norma 7.7 JAP and they were like $43.95 for 20 rounds . My grandpa give it to me and I would not take a million for it .

Those boys went through absolute hell on Guadalcanal. The Naval detachment that was supporting the marines on Guadalcanal was sunk and they had to go several weeks without reinforcement or resupply against well entrenched, experienced Japanese troops.

The fact that he got out of Guadalcanal alive and with a souvenir such as that rifle is quite the family story. Do not sell the rifle. I would not even dare put rounds through it. I'd clean it and display it in my home office.
