I am looking at buying a rental house that has an old but nice condtion 30x30 garage sitting out in the backyard. I am considering taking it down and moving t to my house. I think I can save the walls, rafters, and garage doors but I guess the siding decking and roofing would be trash? Would I be better off just buying the lumber and having it built from scratch?

If you consider the labor costs involved in the teardown and move you would probably be better off building new. Consider what the garage is valued on the tax rolls. Does it add value to the rental property? Would it be something you could rent separately as storage or is too integrated with the house?

Look at the cost of lightweight steel frame garage buildings. If the roof is done right they look ok.

I believe i would try to move all you could. Then go back and see what needs to be added. Seems like you would save alot of money doing it that way.

I moved my office inside a building the same way. I took out the walls, drug them over with a bobcat, and put them in there new place.....saved alot of money!!

I just built my 2500 square foot workshop from scratch. If you can swing a hammer, build it yourself. I got a buddy who's an out of work carpenter help me do it real cheap. That's what I'd do. I'll post pictures of my workshop.
