I see on S&W website that they charge $50 for a formal letter regarding the history of your firearm. Will they provide basic information over the phone? I don't believe I have the need to have a formal letter regarding my firearms history. I inherited a 36 from my grandfather rather recently. I don't know a lot about the gun, nor the engraving. I can only assume that it was a job done by S&W. The gun itself is in pretty good shape. The pictures are terrible, but would anybody have any info on a gun such as this??

Post the dash number (36-?) and the first part of the serial number, and we can give you some info.

A lot of people do engraving. I would bet if you emailed some detailed pics of the engraving to S&W they would tell you if it is a factory job.

As near as I can tell, your gun falls in the 1962-1966 time period. I'm not sure on the engraving. If it was mine I would spend the $50 for the factory letter as this would greatly increase the value if it could be documented as Smith engraving.
