Defensive handgun courses in Tennessee?

Are there any defensive training courses for Handgun, similar to Front Sight in Nevada, in Tennessee or North Carolina? We have had our HCP for years now and carry only for personal defense but would like to be more "aware" of situations before they arise. We are not looking for certifications.

Austin's here in Oak Ridge offers several classes and I've heard nothing but positive remarks about them. They're also a great gun shop.

I probably overlooked it, but what is the ammo and magazine requirements for this class? IE.. 200 rounds of ammo and 4 magazines...or 50 rounds and one magazine, etc....

Thanks,

600 rounds and at least 3 magazines or speed loaders/speed strips

I looked at the courses for CSI, I liked the 1 day class, that could be a good place to start. What my husband and I would eventually hope to take is a class that does not center on shooting at targets that are the typical round lined targets. If we would ever have to use our handgun for protection, the attacker(s) would be moving and would not be round and lined. The adrenalin would be rushing, nerves would kick in, and we would need to remain calm. We were at a gunshow and tried to purchase targets that were not the typical configuration but were unsuccessful. Is it a no-no to request targets that would look like a (potential) attacker?

Another question: I've read that these courses require a holster. I carry my Glock 26 when I go food shopping, I put it in the back part of a bellypack, in the front part of the bellpack I carry my glasses and wallet, this eliminates carrying(and forgetting to keep an eye on) a handbag. Has anyone taken a course with an alternative holster?

There are a variety of paper targets available that are somewhat more realistic photograph based rather than just silhouette targets. You can purchase these, or the instructor wherever you choose to train may have them on hand.

The CIS classes I've taken used the photographic targets of bad guys (and girls) pointing guns at you.

I used a holster for everything. I'd e-mail Todd @ CIS and discuss the holster/no holster thing with him. In a training enviroment, depending on the setup it might be a safety issue...but I'm not sure.

dunndw...thanks for the assist, brother.

nancy...regarding targets, at the beginning of a class, we use round targets to work on fundamentals. After that, it's all photo, life-sized "attacker" targets.

Our 1-day, Advanced Concealed Carry class is designed for what YOU carry everyday. We want people to show up with the equipment they use for everyday defense, whether it's "uber-tactical cool" or not.

Our 2-day, Defensive Pistol class is designed around the mid to service sized semi-auto carried in a strong side holster (inside waistband, outside waistband, or thigh holster).

There are several "after action reports" of CIS classes in our sub-forum here at TGO if you want to read what past students had to say about our classes.

Also, for out-of-town students, we have a nice local hotel that offers a CIS student discount rate.

Give me a call or PM with any other questions. (615)347-0787
