Invisible dog fence setup?

I used the Pet safe brand for 10 years until my Rottie died. The color it came with just made him shake his head and look at you and keep running. I went and bought the Stubborn Dog Collar and but it on him and he took of full speed for the road again and it turned him a flip. He never went towards the road again. If you install just bury the wire at least six inches in the ground no matter how you dad says it doesn't matter, or you will be fixing it every time you mow. Pet safe also fixed my transmitter several times because it kept getting hit by lightening. DO NOT MOUNT IT NEXT TO YOUR BREAKER BOX or you will spend a lot of money in transmitters.

I work at PetSafe. There are a variety of different options to contain your pet. You can go with the wireless fence that doesn’t have any buried wire. They are more expensive but easier to set up and are portable. Things to consider on wireless are that the boundary will be an adjustable (up to 90 feet in all directions) circle. So if you want to contain a rectangle or square shaped back yard, it may not suit your situation.

Wired containment systems are cheaper, more labor required for set-up, but can mold to any yard and can cover up to 25 acres. You also have better options on size and strength of receiver collars with wired.

To speak to some of the concerns other had posted. Yes, with wired containment the pet will get a static correction when they exit the yard. The collar activates when near the boundary wire so if the dog tries to reenter, it will experience another correction. Because of this, training is key. With the wireless system, the collar activates when it loses signal from the transmitter. The pet would experience a correction for 30 seconds after leaving the area and getting the warning tone. At that point the correction would stop, and the pet could reenter without correction.

As far as systems go, our company has several brands. The Guardian brand which is what you probably saw at Walmart, is our basic system. It works well for non-stubborn dogs and can cover up to 10 acres and has 3 levels of correction. The PetSafe brand which would be at Home Depot, PetSmart, etc. has transmitters that will cover 25 acres, basic and deluxe collars (5 correction levels - little dog collar, stubborn dog collar). However you can use the Guardian and PetSafe products interchangeably.

Me too, though only once. That's one thing to aware of with the "bury the wire" version.... when the thunderstorms roll in, unplug the system. I believe they make some sort of doodad that protects the system now.

I'd recommend a squirt gun (super soaker ) with ammonia or vinegar. Drive back and forth, when the dog comes charging out, blast 'em.

My opinions:

1. As was said - training is the key to making any of them work.

2. Watch the cheap kits - their underground wire generally sucks. Unless you particularly enjoy digging and burying wire - upgrade to some better wire, it's money well spent on the front end.

Whom did you speak with, and what exactly did they say?

The first bids were when I lived in Brentwood. I went to the Invisible Fence website and had it set up by calling the 1-800 number. This was a handful of years ago. there was no way to afford it at that time so I went with the DIY option and it worked flawless. My neighbor asked if he could pay me to do his yard and I let him know that if he needed help I would help but this wasnt something I did nor did I want to make a career of it. (He wasnt THAT good of a neighbor ) He asked who could do it and I referred him to the main website. He told me a week later he had received the same bid.

Move forward a few years (2005) I was temporarily a resident of another state and needed to get a quote again (this is where I heard the discount on air). It was that salesman that made the comment about the discount.

I already had the parts and I couldnt find a mini trencher so I found a "modified" sod cutter. It was much harder but still only about 45 bucks to rent.

I probably had it easy training my dog since she has always been worked with so the training portion is much more valuable to others I am sure.

I love how it worked with my dog (there was an existing fence in the yard I have now). It was just out of the realm of being affordable at those time and I am not one to finance anything but a house.

I didnt keep the bids to give you a name. The only one that came in the nice folder was from the other state.

I dont have a bad taste in my mouth about the company or the people that came to give me a bid. I felt bad for wasting their time actually. I just tend to be more of a do it yourselfer if I know I can do it properly. If not. I save up and hire out.
