Is this a legitimate program?

Got some pop up yesterday saying my version of MS Silverlight had expired and I need to download the new version.

I did not know I had this, nor had I ever heard of it.

So should I do the download or is this a virus I may have or may be fixing to get?

it's a plug-in that allows certain web graphics to display, but it's not a virus or anything.

It's legit. Think of it as Microsoft's version of Adobe Flash. You need it as a browser plug in to view some websites properly. No worries.

What he said. It's just Microsoft trying to expand their empire.

I subscribe to Netflix. One of the freebies is the ability to watch full length movies in real time over your computer connection. The MS Silverlight program enables Netflix movies to run on your computer. They update it every now and then.

If you run Windows Update (under Tools in IE) it will show up as an optional or recommended install.

That's the problem.. it's simple for a bunch of computer geeks, not for everyone else.

I had to rebuild my wifes computer yesterday. she got a virus I just couldn't shake.. 8 HOURS LATER all the updates finally completed.

bloatware... total and utter bloatware.

That'll teach me not to have a recent ghost image on hand.

Symantec (Norton) Ghost disk cloning/backup program.

I used it for years, then it hosed MBR (Master Boot Record) on my then new XP Home machine. Twice.

Sold it on eBay, was Ghost 2003 w/ XP update.

I've been happy enough with a freebie program for a number of years now:

DriveImage XML.
