What does an internal and external extractor look like?

Patriot,

Trust me, you are doing the right thing getting a 1911 first. I wished I'd have known how great they were before I loaded up on plastics. To me there's just no comparison. Not sure if you've been to this 1911 site, but I like it. Spent 3 months on it before buying my first 1911. 1911Forum - Powered by vBulletin

Now you will run into some 1911 purists who swear by JMB's original design, and will not touch a variant. To this I say B.S. S&W makes good 1911's all with external extractors.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the reassurance. I've browsed the 1911 forum quite a few times and it has been very helpful as well. After handling the plastic guns available out there and then having some friends introduce me to 1911s, I admit I had the feeling that a 1911 is simply what a gun should feel like. I'm a pretty big guy, so a steel gun feels right to me. I also like the feeling of handling something that millions of Americans have relied on for a century both at home and at war. I just don't get that feeling from anything else.
