The other day in an effort to clean up the hard drive a bit, I accidentally removed Outlook (don't ask...it's a long explanation)

Well today is the first day I had a chance to do anything about it, thankfully the system restore function created a restore point. Had a bit of trouble getting it restored until I booted into Safe Mode and ran System Restore and got it back.

The trouble is now when I open it. I can see my old e-mails, but at first it appeared to be trying to install again. I went into Add and Remove programs > Windows components and fixed that, but.... Now after I open it I just get an error message that Outlook is not installed for the current user and it closes.

I am looking for my install disk, but after the 2 moves in the last few months and the boys moving back in with me...it is God knows where.

Is there anything else I can do to fix this situation?

Thanks in Advance!!

i need a little bit more info to help you. Outlook? or outlook express? and what OS? The big thing here is the database that has all your mail and stuff in it. as long as you have that, we can always reinstall outlook and just use your existing database, if you did not delete it. It is normally under the user folder. so if you just deleted outlook from the "Program Files" folder, we should be ok.

For example, in Windows XP, the actual program would be under "C:\Program Files\microsoft\outlook" or something along those lines, while the actual mail, your incoming, and outgoing e-mails and stuff are in "C:\Documents and Settings\(username, or profile name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook" or something their about....outlook express is a little bit different.

In the long run, you should be able to just reinstall outlook and hopefully be good to go depending on what OS and all that fun stuff.

Is this Outlook or Outlook Express?

Does this help...

Microsoft Outlook Has Not Been Installed for the Current User

Funny you should ask, that is part of the long explanation.

The computer came with Outlook Express on it. I later purchased a PDA and it came with Outlook 2002 to install on the PC. So I installed it. When I was removing programs, I thought I was removing the Outlook Express and would be leaving the Outlook 2002, but apparently it got all of it.

I have seen the webpage you posted, but one of the instructions is to "reinstall" which I don't think I can do until when/if I can locate the install disk.

The important thing is to locate your PST file and save it, you will need it to restore your emails after you reinstall outlook

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition.

I used the add and remove programs function to remove it, but I was able to use system restore to get it back, it appears I have all my old e-mails and address book. It for some reason just thinks that it is not installed...or at least not for me.

So it's starting to look like reinstalling is going to be my only shot, huh?

Guess I'm just going to have keep digging for the disk.

Ok, here's the latest.

I dug out the installation CD, but it says there is a newer version that will have to be removed first.

I'm afraid if I unistall I'll loose all my old e-mails and address book. So I guess what I need to do is what trblmkr13 said and copy the PST file right? But I'm not sure if I know how to then use that to restore everything.

EDIT: Ok when I search for PST there is an Archive.pst and an Outlook.pst for both my son's and daughter's profile, but under my profile there is an Archive.pst, Outlook.pst, Outlook1.pst and Outlook2.pst The Outlook1.pst is the largest. But do I just need to copy all of them and then but them all back?

Go to control panel, add/remove programs, select the change/ remove option, then select ms office (insert year here) then click the link "click here for support information", then click the repair button,

Put in install cd and browse to a folder

that contained "PROI11N.MSI

Then search for hidden files and folders and find

C:\MSOCache\All

Users\90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9

You should get an error message saying Windows is configuring ms office or something to that effect.

Other than that you may have to go into the registry in safe mode and delete the instances of outlook and then remove it from add remove programs, reboot and then reinstall.

Ok, what I ended up doing was just going straight to the setup file on the disk.

I was getting the "Newer Version" installed from the menu that automatically came up when I put the disk in. The disk has active sync on it as well for the PDA.

Anyway while looking for the file that Aplha7 mentioned, (that I couldn't find) that is when I saw the setup.exe file.

So I made copies of the PST files, ran the setup and all seems to be well, didn't even have to copy the PST files back. All e-mails there, rules still in place and so on.

Thanks everyone for the help!!
