I carry remington golden sabre 165 grain jhp in my xd. According to sanow ballistic test they had 93% one stop shot rating which was higher than any other ammo tested. Gold dots were on the list but I think they were only about 88%

I keep 155gr for my PM40. My other larger 40's I'll go up to 165. This is good ammo but when I can get it I prefer rem gs or speer. I don't buy 180gr JHP in .40

Me either simply not enough penetration with 180 grain.

The lighter the bullet the more velocity it has. If I am not mistaken the more velocity it has the deeper it will penetrate.

180gr will actually penetrate further due to greater momentum... what it lacks is muzzle energy (on paper). But either 165gr or 180gr using quality JHP projectiles commonly reach about 14" in gelatin. A more critical question would be which load cycles and fires better out of your particular gun...?

Not really... a lighter bullet, even travelling faster, has less momentum. Plus, lighter bullets are more likely to fragment and penetrate very little. This is why 135gr .40s&w bullets usually create a large, shallow wound, and heavier bullets go deeper, but with a more narrow wound track.

right now i am using black talonsgiven to me from a police officer and since i don't have access to a lot of them i have only fired about 5 of them through my gun. i want to shoot 500 through my gun so i think i need to switch to something i can buy off of the shelf. [deleted - wrong forum]

You can buy winchester rangers off gunbroker.com by the case. They are essentially the same thing as black talons. They cost about 10.00 more per box than regular for whatever reason but you can get em.

Personally,

If it were me I would use golden sabres but that is just me. You can get them for 19.99 a box from ammunitiontogo.com which is cheaper than bass pro cuz they want 29.99 a box for em.

I heard that. They usually lower the prices when they have Excess and seem to jack em up when they are running low.

i was wanting to buy several boxes but decided i had better buy one box shoot it and see how it cycles in my glocks than stock up and sell this black talons or just shoot them for the heck of it.

135gr produces the greatest amount of hydrostatic shock (I read it on the internet so it must be true ) Speaking of which I might have some LE posted up in the classifieds section real soon.
