Question On Carrying in TN

I've recently moved to Tennessee and am in the process of obtaining my CC license. I have licenses in 3 states, 2 of which have recip agreements with TN. TN gives a person moving to TN with a CC license issued by another state 6 months to apply for a TN license. Does this mean that for that 6 month period or until my TN license comes through I can still carry under my other licenses?

I believe that means you may carry under your other license for 6 months.

The problem that you will run into will be in a situation where you present a valid Tennessee Drivers License to a cop along with a handgun permit from another state. Even though it is issued in your name, DOB, etc... you best pray that said cop is well versed and educated in the carry laws of this state and fully understands the reciprocity agreements between the states.

If not, I can assure you that you or your Attorney will be explaining it to a Judge. I'm not saying it would happen but my money would be on you getting legally hassled over you not being hassled.

Also understand that you cannot carry a gun in your vehicle without a valid state issued HCP.

Welcome to Tennessee take some time to educate yourself on the gun laws here as we do have some on the books that might make one think they moved to Michigan or Delaware by mistake...

Yes.

According to 39-17-1351®(3)( you have 6 months after you have become a resident to obtain a TN permit. To me obtain means have in hand, not just apply for. But for those 6 months you can carry on your out of state permit.

It depends on which state you already have a permit in what the requirments are to get a TN permit.

It appears to me they give you six months to obtain a permit. That means you better apply within three months.

Yeah, especially with the loooooong wait time people have been experiencing that last couple of years. I'd not procrastinate and get the ball rolling as soon as possible. Welcome to Tennessee, the patron state of shooting stuff....

Thanks everyone. I have taken the 8 hour course and will be submitting my application tomorrow. It's nice to know that Tennessee won't arbitrarily disarm a new resident. I came from upstate NY and if I was a Tennessee resident moving there, I'd have to either sell my guns or leave them with an FFL holder until my license in NY came through, which can take 6 months or more plus a lot of expense. In all likelyhood it would be restricted to hunting/target shooting as unrestricted (concealed carry) are very hard to come by, depending on the county. Also, even though I have an unrestricted license there, I can't carry in New York City. Makes me wonder what New York State thinks unrestricted means. It is the least "free" state in this country.

Gotcha. I was reading it that he couldn't carry in his vehicle unless it was a TN permit.
