I've got some old, read o-l-d .45 ball from I'm assuming 1942. Some of it says "R A 42" , "WCC 42" , "WRA 42" what does this mean?

Means that it is mildly corrosive, and if you shoot it, clean with ammonia or HOT soap and water as well as standard cleaning...

I assume RA=Remington Arms, WCC= WInchester Cartridge Company and I dunno about WRA. 42 is probably 1942.

I have shot ammo just like that. IN the SIG 220 it worked just fine. Yes it is corrosive. Yes, do clean it thoroughly. I dont know about ammonia or soap and water. People today tend to treat corrosive ammo like it was the plague or something. But how often did troops in the jungles of Borneo get to clean weapons?

trust me on this one..the rifle often outlived the user in pacific theaters...

also the bore cleaner that they used (when they could get it) did the trick on the corrosive powder.

also, todays' shooter is not in a war..and wants to keep their weapon in the best possible condition. to me that would warrant taking the extra steps to make the corrosive residue inert...

other than that, shoot away! :D

Pouring store-brand Windex down the barrel, then with hot soap & water seems to work just fine for me. Drying the barrel out can take a little while sometimes though...
