It is the same as my EDC, a glock 17. Only thing that might change is if more penetration is needed switching from my normal 115gr +P Gold Dot load to a 147gr TMJ load. As to the why..... the primary function of JHP or expanding ammunition in general in a defensive handgun is to limit liability of the danger posed to innocents caused by over penetration. In this environment over penetration is not as much of a concern. The issue is does it have enough penetration to be capable of reaching and sufficiently damaging vitals to stop the threat. Here the largest things I'm likely to encounter in the wilds are black bears and feral hogs. That being the case I feel confident in my choices as well as in my ability to employ them effectively. JMHO....OMV.

I didn't see anyone in Alaska, at least in bear country, with just a Glock. I strongly recommend to anyone (that I would want to see again) heading out into backcountry Alaska to take at least one 12 gauge loaded with slug-buckshot-slug (454 casull will do too). A 10mm Glock with good shot placement might be good enough for a black bear but a charging brown or grizzly you need more power and spread.

I agree but I treat Alaska as the exception not the rule. Your not going to run into 4 legged or 2 legged offender that cant be handled by a .45, or revolver in a good magnum round. I have fished in Alsaka and did carry a 454 Casull, but I've only been lucky enough to go there 1 time.

XD 45, for the 2 legged critters. I don't worry about the wildlife in TN very much. Although 13 rounds of 45 with 13 more in the spare mag would probably sufice for the small bears around here.
