Opinions wanted - Marlin 308MXLR

So the wife says she wants a lever action rifle. I've been thinking about it too, and this one caught my eye. Has anyone had any experience with these rifles, whether in .308 or the other calibers they offer? I really like the looks, but as we all know, that only gets you so far.

The wife will be using it mainly for target shooting, at the range. I will want a scope and will take it hunting, whatever I end up with.

Thanks in advance.

I have 1894 in .357 and 336 in .30-30.

Great weapons. The 1894 is among my fav firearms.

Never shot the .308ME, seems to be a pretty capable round, but you won't find the ammo just anywhere. Hence not a big choice for TEOWAWKI. :)

marlinowners.com if you want to read up on opinions re that gun/caliber in a hurry.

Thanks, I'll look at the website. This is not my end of the world gun, so I may just have to suck up the lack of ammo if I decide to go this direction.

I have a Marlin lever-action model 336. They are some nice rifles, but I don't know anything about that perticular model but it should be a good rifle. The 308 is a good long range caliber and will kill anything around here that you would be wanting to hunt. I'm sure someone with a little more knowledge of that weapon will be along soon. Sorry I wasn't more help.

I have a .308mx and smoked a big 'ole doe on a trot @ 210 yds w/iron sights. Great deer rifle. Incredibly accurate and just as powerful as a .308win. Ammo is not hard to find for it Rem came out with a 150 gr core-lokt this year and hornady has released the bullets for reloading.

Thanks 10mm. That makes me feel a little better. I've done a little more reading, with the vast majority of reviews being very positive. It sounds to me like this could be the lever action rifle that gets people back into shooting lever action rifles.

Ive owned a couple of Marlin 336's, and have tested them a few times against Winchester 94's. EVERY TIME the Marlin wins. Ive always like the feel of a Marlin over any other lever gun. These were .30-30 rifles now. They are strong well made accurate rifles.

Also-the Cowboy rifles are AWESOME. Ive actually seen one used in a defense match, and it beat out several AR's. Put you a ghost ring sight on it,and its an excellent hunting/defense gun.

I got one last year for my birthday, by the time I found the proper scope it was too late for me to hunt last season. But it's a beauty.

Just put ya a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40 on it and you will have a 400yd, leveraction, deer killin machine. Academy sports has them for a good price.$529. I got mine when they first came out for $489
